Panicked and ran out, managing to make it just before Firkraag could claw my character to death... next thing I knew he was stuck behind a desk in the jail room... quicksaved, tried to charge in, got fireballed again, reloaded and found him in the room just beyond...

Didn't have to resort to such tactics against the shade dragon, fortunately, since the death-breath thing didn't work on any of my party members (though it did off a fire elemental rather effortlessly) and it finally occurred to me, after many, many reloads, to turn party AI off so Minsc wouldn't charge to his death all the time...
