I was more prone to read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's (Non-Holmesian) stuff like 'Lost World' and 'The White Company'. Much better than the over-rated Sherlock Holmes stuff, imho.

Tarzan and John Carter didn't appeal to me at all.

Jules Verne's books and characters are what I would call my equivelent of your Burroughs' jones.

It still amazes me how much Verne predicted correctly from 1863...... submarines, atomic power - the list is incredible.

In 'Mysterious Island' he even got the mushroom cloud right. Of course, his treatment of radiation poisoning and it's effect on flora and fauna, gave the Japanese grist for all kinds of crappy Godzilla movies.
