Sorry, but I totally disagree with your review of this year's Miss Wisconsin competition. Compared to last year's trainwreck of a Miss America competition, Wisconsin was way better.

First of all they have kept the production value, something that Miss America has totally abandoned. The opening number was awesome -- upbeat, colorful, and so what if some of the choreography was similar to previous years. At least, there was an opening number and the candidates weren't lounging around on the floor when they gave their introductions. There's something very invigorating when each candidate comes up to the microphone and is greeted by the applause of their respective cheering sections.

Jennifer and Eve were highlighted throughout their respective nights. You never saw last year's Miss America, except during the last few minutes of the competiton. In my mind, that is totally unacceptable, but that's the way it's been at Miss America for several years now.

As a patron, you pay $100.00 for four nights of competiton, plus access to the reception. That's quite a bargain compared to the cost of attending the Miss America preliminaries and final night. Plus, they charge you an arm and a leg for the other special events during the week.

Yes, the stage was simple but it was tastefully done, and the lighting really enhances it. Gone are the days when you have elaborate stages, and in reality as long as the stage isn't bare-bones, what's the big deal?

David Weincek has emceed for 10 years now, and although I think they could change that up, he does a good job and always makes the candidates the stars of each night, very similar to what Bert Parks did. The emecees at Miss America this past year were horrible, mainly because they were chosen at the last minute and from what I understand had litle time to run through a last-minute written script.

On the final night of competition, Miss Wisconsin had the top 11 compete in ALL phases of competition -- something that Miss America is constantly tinkering with. The candidates were scored in the Red Carpet competition -- something that Miss America has abandoned. Thank goodness the states are keeping this sense of elegance and glamour in their competitions. Plus there was a closing number, which allowed all 22 candidates to be seen in their evening gowns and walk the runway. There is no runway at Miss America anymore.

Former Miss Wisconsin's in attendance are always announced, and this year they were asked to recall their first Miss America memory. At Miss America, there were many former Miss America's in attendance and they almost forgot to bring them out, and when they did, they walked aimlessly out on the stage as if that segment hadn't even been rehearsed. There were no introductions -- what a complete slap in the face to all those former Miss America's who chose to attend the 100th anniversary.

When the new Miss Wisconsin was chosen, she had a runway walk, and guess what, even received flowers. Apparently they had no money to give to the 100th anniversary Miss America, and she stood there not knowing what to do with herself -- another example of a poorly produced competition.

I agree about the microphone feedback during preliminary piano performances, but they corrected that on the final night.

I did not attend the reception, so I can't comment on that, but I felt the state board did an exceptional job with this year's production. Too bad Miss America can't take note. Attend next year's Miss America competition and I think you will think differently.
