William R. Carpenter (army serial Number O-450256) was with 2nd battalion HQ and was KIA in the Rhineland.

Of course with an O prefix on w\hsi serial number he was a commisioned officer.

According the "Ready" the 505th PIR unit history (p.112). He was promoted to Major and made battilion XO during the period 25 Dec., 1944-2 Jan., 1945 when Major Kaiser was promoted to Lt Col.

At about 08:00 hours On 7 Jan., 1945 Carpenter assumed temporary command of 2nd Battalion when Col Vandervoort was wounded by morter fire during action at Goronne Belgium.

Carpenter was soon formally given command of the Battalion.

Carpenter drowned while crossing the Rhine river during a patrol in April 1945.

Thsi is what I could dig up in the course of about 30 minutes of research. Please e-mail me. I think I can provide further assistance.

Sam Kimpton
