Yes This confirms my suspicions as well. I was going to post but Frits beat me to the punch here.

There are four Fergusons listed in Bob Gillette's Roster, which admitedly is not complete, and James is not one of them.

Based on the campaigns you mentioned I thought it possible that he was with the 504th as Normandy is not mentioned and Naples and Rome are.
