Subject: 505th PIR Tactical Sign (helmet)

An SC photo of 82nd paratroopers marching down Highway 115 where the railroad crosses the road near Dilligenza, Sicily (West of Vittoria), 11 July, 1943, seems to reveal one man's BLACK STAR on the side of his helmet (similar to the white star painted at a later stage of the war).

Further examination is needed (a big blow-up of this photo [available at the National Archives in College Park, MD] will probably reveal more details).

Another SC photo taken at the Gatekeeper's House about one mile East of Biazzo (not Biazza) Ridge where Highway 115 again crosses the railroad (also 11 July, 1943) clearly shows the 3/505 "Cannonball" insignias on the sides of 3/505 men (and the man in the extreme right-hand corner of the photo is wearing the mortar shell vest; an examination of the shadows on the ground might reveal what time the picture was taken -- before, during or after the Battle for Biazzo). This is the same location where the famous picture of Gavin and Thompson was taken (in fact, "Beaver" Thompson and Gavin may very well be in "Gatekeeper's" photo, too).

504th PIR tactical signs in the MTO is another can of worms.
