"I used to be a highly respected watched, now I'm a wounded dwarf with the strength of a mystical doily" - Giles, Chosen.

Well, I have to say that the second I heard the opening credits I knew this was it. It was over and that has to have been the fastest 42 minutes of my entire life. It just flew by as if I was watching the trailer or something.

The entire first scene was intolerable with the whole unrealistic Angel scene. Not only have they both loved others since he left but he killed his own son "technically" just days before hand yet he is still finding it right to act like a child. Buffy's dialogue is the most unconvincing I've ever heard from her in the past three years which makes me think even more, that Joss lost interest after The Gift, and this is how he wanted Buffy to stay, light and frothy with a hint of density.

"splainy" "cookie dought" and her non comprehension of the word 'trinket' just seemed forced and out of character but I must say...cut Caleb a new one, that rawked!!! black gung...not so pretty!

I am so glad Dawn kicked Buffy but I think they could've played up to that a little more.
Anya and Xander seemed a little off in this scene. But the humour is coming so not to fear...

The picture of Angel was hilarious IMHO and Buffy described thier attitude towards eachother perfectly leading to Angel:ReVamped. "Where's tall dark and forehead"
Spike seems to have gotten a little cutesy dumb over the last episode what with the kitchen scene in End Of Days and the "People don't use thier tongues to say hello, well, i guess they do"

"Oil of some kind involved" I don't think was a joke, more a request from Buffy's side when she referred to locking Spike in a room with Angel.

Then comes the almost episode by episode line with a dig at Andrew followed by Spike saying "I've ***********fill in the blank*********** in my time...but never..." then the un-needed sexual implications that lead to sleeping together without sex which only worked as special for 'Touched' she's refreshed now so it's not big or clever.

Did anyone notice that the First!Buffy is about 3 inches shorter than 3D!Buffy. Saying that, shortstackFEBuffy was really good with the snarky bitch in this episode.

was certainly not feeling "drowning in footwear" where has Joss been? When was the last time he saw what these characters were like?

YAY! stumbling nervous yet encouraging Giles is back, anyone else think Eliza Dushku is actually an action figure? Love Giles reaction to the pierced tongue, not Dawns, she knows about sex, she's not a child. Kennedy and Willow practically go 'Lesbian Spank Inferno' in the middle of the house anyways!

Speeches, when it comes to Buffy making them, they generally taste sock, but this one wasn't so "The Gift" and airy fairy breathy and meaningful. It was, real. hard. less making you want to shake her violently. Good basement scene with Wood anf Faith, however, the ship that is being set up makes me want Tru Calling to be huge so I never have to witness them in "Faith" together.
Faith came across a bit, more Faithlike, but still ruined. Love the reaction to Wood being prettier than her and her undoing her belt, thinking she was sex goddess. Not appreciating her new found loss of five by five and love of "'Yo"

Kennedy has become so much more likeable in these last few episodes and this scene again demonstrates how much Joss wanted to keep the characters frothy. Kennedy was good and supportive, a little soft for her, but it shows her time sharing a house with three dozen people, has made her less spoilt and more grown up.

Dungeons and Dragons was great, that Giles line is my favourite of the episode and I wish Amanda has made it to a spinoff with Andrew as she's so great. I love her.Andrew is at his gayest. Anya snores! aww she looked so sweet.

You could feel the pending doom as the heavy music panned over the school bus. I figured a couple more potentials would've been scattered around the building.

Not impressed with the core scoobies scene, a bit too cheery for me, Dawn was good, shows how she's grown from the shrieking dwarf of season 5. Andrew was hilarious with his speech and so awwbless, didn't love Anya here.

Who was wondering around in the background during the dizzy scooby chat? was it wood? or was it a crew member?
I think I could actually see backstage when Xander left Buffy alone.

Joss really wasn't joking about the Lord Of The Rings effects! What I dont understand, even with slayer power, is how 40 odd slayers could take out 40,000 odd Turok Hans when Buffy could barely do one and sometime she has trouble with a regular vampire.

Have the noodles changed colour? more red and brown than green.Decent speech flashback here, Joss does like them in the finale's doesn't he? White haired willow? not a look I'd go for myself.
Vi totally kicked arse! I want the slayerschool spinoff NOW!!!!
How sweet was the baseball girl? Giddy non crack High Willow was cool.

The entire big fight was astounding, nobody didn't rule this thing and for anyone unspoiled, they'd think Buffy was gonna die. Coz i was spoiled and i still did. Anya fights for Bunny's...thats great. Dawn not so great with the standing there and all.

Since when can Andrew, Anya, Wood, Giles and Xander fight uber vamps

Was Anya stabbed or sliced from shoulder to gut? either way it didn't look half as brutal as it was described and how pray tell did Andrew manage to fend off the rest of the ubervamps and bringers alone?

Oh...okay I just slow motioned it and yes...it was shoulder to gut...brutal indeed. Since when do Ubervamps need swords? and where to they get them?
AMANDA!!!! noooooooo!! she moved her eyes when she was meant to be dead!

How cool was FE Buffy here and how gutted did she/he/it look when 3DBuffy stood up all slow mo and cavewomanish
Kennedy threw the ubervamp into a stalegtite (sp) head first! cool! Either this lot really put some hours into practice or half the unnamed slayers are actually stunt actors.

Also, look carefully after the Kennedy bit, when Buffy swings the axe and I think...not sure, but think 2 ubies attack eachother.
then SPIKE pinned down!

Eliza is so good at shouting commands! she so needs to lead a gang she has a really "raaaaaa" voice!
The whole collapsing school must've been so fun to film...dead Anya lying behind the bringer! OMG not as upsetting as i thought as she was barely recognisable but how bad must that be to play dead like that then watch it back?

Did Buffy mean it when she said she loved Spike? I think so, but I don't think she's in love with him. Why didnt her hand get burnt? Seeing Spike crumble was...It reminded me of Doyle in 'Hero' (Angel: 1x9 - no episode of anyshow upset me more) Wicked cool effects with the school building coming down.

Sunnydale being swallowed didn't have so much impact on me. I like my finale's to be set at night! Vi was cool on the bus, I want a Vi show!!!! NOW GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!!!!!!

My darling Andrew...part of me doesn't want him in another ME show as he'll be all manic depressive and wanting to know why he's alive. For someplace that doesn't have a whole lot of town yet has 2 High Schools, a University and 12 Cemeteries...there was one hell of a lot to swallow up.

Willow and Dawn seemed keen on continuing the fight, Buffy, not so much. Faith was cool and she stood as part of the gang! nice little Andrew/Xander scene. glad he wasn't bitter with him. Wood was soooo dead...what if the FE went into him and thats why he woke up? You dont stay with your eyes open like that!!!! Faith looked HOT with good make up after the battle.

Wish theyd stepped closer to the crater so we could look down in it. Willow just seemed so keen and ready to take over (ahem wake up Aly, take the spinoff) Dawn says they could all sleep...where? The logical thing would have them all move to LA or some to cleveland that want to fight on...but...not convenient to the Angel story.

Smile...odd.

Music ...good.

Effects...greats.

Dialogue....Off.

Plot...great.

Closure....some.

Emotions...not high.

End...it was.

Sarah Michelle, Alyson, Nick, Emma, Michelle, James, D.b, Tony, Eliza, Felicia, Indigo, Sarah, Nathan, David, Iyari, Joss...top job! See you for a movie in about 3 years time.

as finales go

[> In one point I disagree with you -- hg, 11:09:16 05/20/03 Tue (217.85.185.242)

this was IMO in no way better than "Becoming". But I am highly biased and think nothing is better than "Becoming", with maybe the exception of OMWF.

Otherwise, I am bit disappointed. It was the series finale, yet, in EVERY season finale, way more unanswered questions were explained. While watching the Buffy/ Angel conversation for the first time, I fell asleep (!), and the second time I used the fast forward button, because it was just to painful to watch.

After Angel left, it became much better, IMO, although it was odd that after half of this episode was open, still NOTHING has happened (with the exception of the ultimate demise of Caleb, but that was a very short scene).

I am still not very fond about the idea to awake all these Slayers with the spell. but mainly because I am afraid to see a bunch of them in Angel. And to contradict you: I so NOT want to see slayer school spinoff, and I am just glad and relieved, that it isn't a theme anymore. None of them has developped a character IMO or is interesting as an individual. And I still hate K***** with a passion you can't even imagine. I found her nearly tolerable in "Empty Places" but then came "Touched" and all the hatred was back. But I accept her as Willow's punishment for her murders last years.

The fight scenes were all in all very good, but I think the ubervamps are an unworthy finale villain. There is just no emotonial connection between. Plus, may I say this, it was stupid, stupid, stupid that the Slayers didn't wait opening the seal, until Willow had done the spell. That was that stupid, that all of them deserve to die for this as a proper punishment. It was the IMO most stupid thing a character (or in this case characters) ever did on this show.

I am glad Anya went out as a hero. It was unnecessary brutal, but I am just relieved they changed the part in the shooting script and she really died saving Andrew, and it wasn't just one of Andrew's stories, like in the script. However, I am annoyed that her death took 1 second of screentime, while Spike died for about half an hour. That is not fair, especially because Spike comes back anyway.

Loved the Xander/ Andrew scene in the end. Hated the mall talk. That was useless brabble, especially, because Xander was involved. I yelled at the screen: "Shut up, Xander". The heart of the group, and he grieved for about twenty seconds about Anya. Thanks ME, for making me hate a character, I always liked, in the very last scene. And Wood's joke was not funny, but tasteless. Anya, Spike and a bunch of SiTs just died, and he has nothing better to do, than play dead to see Faith' reaction. In my version of the finale, he died offscreen, while Buffy was smiling in the crater.

And although for some reason this sounds pretty negative, I mostly enjoyed and liked this episode. But I didn't love it and I think there are many, many better "Buffy" episodes.

I give it a B-.

I just dont see Becoming as anything special at all. Did anya die saving andrew? I didn't notice, I thought she was just caught off guard.

With seaso finale's wrapping things up, thats so they can move onto the next season. THey dont need to do that here as they'll be wanting a Movie/Spinoff franchise in which to deal with such things.

As for the emotional attachment, I don't think it was needed here as the emotional attachment, is, again, usually to lead to something with the next season (also where was the emotional attachment with The Master and Adam who simply wanted her dead.)

than I wrote my whole opinion about the episode and forgot to change the topic headline.

And Anya died saving Andrew. Without her, he would have been probably killed by the ubervamps. I know what happened later, but luckily, I just ignored it. And don't take me away from Egypt.

the saving bit...I just dont get how he survived after she died...there was tonnes around him

dead, because he wouldn't have a chance against such many ubervamps at once. So she did save him. (*I told you, don't brinmg me back from denial land, I spent minutes to change this scene in my head, I don't want to go back to "reality" that soon*)

[> Good review sLaP -- MTsFan *with a question*, 11:37:58 05/20/03 Tue (205.175.220.3)

Perhaps not a question, but a gripe.

The script had a scene the night before the battle where Dawn was telling Buffy lore to the SITs. It appears to have been cut. Was it?

[> I really, really agree -- {mikeyG}/Spoiler-free peeps should back away(Spoilers), 12:09:26 05/20/03 Tue (142.177.209.138)

I LOVED Vi!!!!! I swear, once she ditched that hat she got cool. Like really cool. I want to see her again.

"Wow, that was nifty." - Aly's delivery of that line cracked me up. Much better than "I'm so juiced."

I, too, am distressed by the lack of "five by five" and an abundance of "yo". Faith used to be so cool. I still love her, but she was much better on "Angel" IMO. But I liked the Wood/Faith scene "No way you're prettier than me."

Anya's death, to me, was extremely fast. It took a minute to actually register that it happened. Between her and Amanada I was upset.

Spike's "sacrifice" on the otherhand left me cold. It's like Buffy in "The Gift": I pretty much didn't care cuz I know he'll be back in a few months. Go him dying in a big burny flash of redemptive goodness, but don't expect me to be sad when I know he's not gone forever.

The Xander/Andrew scene makes much more sense to me after "Empty Places". Just watch how he reacts to his injury, pride covering up deep loss with humor and a brave face. That's all we're seeing here, not disregard for Anya's death, as some people have said.

In the end:
Yay to the potentials (Vi especially)
Yay to all the Scoobies (They all had good moments)
Yay to the action and effects (I was totally into that battle)

Nay to the no surprises (I was quite disappointed)

Yeah, not much nay. I loved it!

Great review, sLaPpy! *Hugs*

I am totally obssessed with Vi now! I'm thinking I may have to fit her into FaithFic or AngelFic.

[> Re: Chosen Review by sLaP -- Lewis H., 12:40:17 05/20/03 Tue (192.91.147.35)

Thanks SLaP. Now I am looking forward to the final. The whining on other boards was getting deafining and depressing. I think I'll stop reading posts until after tonight since I am now feeling more positive. Anyway the only thing that really bothers me (and it is just because I am obsessive compulsive) is that we don't know who placed that talisman in Lessons. Was it Wood? Spike? I think I'll go with random Bringer. That is a good enough answer and doesn't require any kind of stretch. The other thing that
wasn't really touched on was the supposed time wonkiness issue. Hopefully, the S7 DVD will explain what their intent was and why they abandoned it. (The date at the beginning of that one episode feels even more out of place now. It will look even wierder in reruns, especially if it was just supposed to be used as reference between BtVS and AtS.)
