Subject: Mini rant about Potentials and Chosen reviews
People have said, alot, that Buffy has thrust this burden upon people, selfishly.
Yet, if most Potentials had already been killed and there were only a few left, alot of which were with Buffy, how was it a burden?
All of the ones with Buffy were told they could leave if they weren't ready to sign on for it. The other ones, had no watchers and know nothing about them being a slayer, they just have this power which, granted, is dangerous if they dont know how to use it but it's not a burden as they've not been given the "Hey kid you're the one person alive that can save the world, go skip" most CHOSE to be chosen ones.

I actually think this was the right thing to do, completely, and makes perfect sense for the storyline. Its pretty much what I wanted the end point of the show to be. Buffy changing the Slayer line for good.
No girl has to have the weight of the world on their shoulders, they can connect, fall in love, be happy. I dont see it as enslavement, but bringing to the forefront something they always had a very strong possibility of being, and now they have people who truly understand it to help them with this new found power.
And I thought the scenes played very well in the finale, a very stirring moment.

But this works IMO only in theory. There are still way less Slayers than "normal" people, and everyone of them still has the burden to help those others. IMO Buffy can't live a normal life, it's just that there are more girls, who can't neither.
Not even mentioning the possibility, that I personally would be frightened beyond anything, if in the real world, some 14 years old teenagers, who don't know how to use them, would get super powers.

Yeh, I know what you mean -- RJA, 19:11:50 05/20/03 Tue (195.93.33.11)
But the same would happen if that girl became a Slayer anyway. There is the chance that any of the girls could have become Slayers, and the CoW taken a while to find them, and then we have the same problem.
The problems with the new Chosen girls are all exactly the same as the Slayer line itself, so the only way to eradicate all the problems is to eradicate the Slayer line, and I dont think thats a great resolution to the story, even if it appears to be easier.
Also, I think that being the only one in the world (or meant to be) is a lot harder than being one of many. Sure its still tough. Thats where the stories are. But with help, support, none of them will have to feel alone, because theyre not meant to be, and there will be others in the same situation. Others that see them as girls, rather than weapons.
I never thought it was about leading a normal life. I dont think Buffy is going to, and I think it undermines the empowerment theme if it shows that thats the best thing for her. Instead she's going to live a life with powers, and help and be fight with similar (and those girls always had every chance they're powers would grow and they would be alone to deal with it in the new situation).

A mini reply -- Eurydice, 16:39:40 05/20/03 Tue (141.154.26.96)
The very fact of super strength and super healing set Buffy apart from the rest of the community - being the Chosen One just added to that. In FFL, she couldn't go to a hospital when she was hurt because people would question her rapid healing. She had to worry about crushing her boyfriends and she had to worry about showing too much physical strength to the outside world. Having super powers changes your life and makes you a different person - and being made a Slayer forces you to make a choice, a choice you wouldn't have had to make before. Also, if Willow could feel Slayers with power all around the world, then there are plenty of them left.
