In reply to: Lynne 's message, "Re: Lynne, Mack has had 2 of those surgeries" on 20:44:06 07/05/07 Thu

"Marlene, how old was Mack when he had his first knee operation?"
MACK WAS 1 YR 9 MONTHS AT THE TIME OF HIS FIRST SURGERY.
AFTER SPENDING 7 MONTHS WORKING ON CONFINEMENT AND
RE-HABING HIM AND NOT DOING WELL - WE FOUND HE HAD BLOWN THE OTHER CL. I FELT LIKE I'D BEEN KICKED IN THE STOMACH WHEN I HEARD THAT

Scarlett is 7 years old and a really big boned girl. Most people think she is a male because she is so BIG. I feel that some of it is from her bloodline. Her Dad was also huge and she inherited her size and personality from him.

THE WEIGHT ISSUE IS SIGNIFICANT IN THESE INJURIES AND RECUPERATION. MACK WEIGHED ABOUT 88# WHEN IT HAPPENED AND I GOT HIM DOWN TO ABOUT 72 AFTER SURGERY (not easy during his confinement w/little exercise)

Do you think she may have less arthritis post surgery but she may have some either way?
YEP.SHE IS GOING TO HAVE ARTHRITIS EITHER WAY. I KNOW - DAMNED IF YOU DO AND DAMNED IF YOU DON'T.

I have restricted her from playing/running with other dogs. When I let her out to go potty while I get the mail, she likes to run a bit, I don't know how to keep her from it other than putting her on a lease every time she leaves the house. I am not encouraging her to run, she does it because she feels so good. Right now, I don't have her on pain meds because I am concerned about her reinjuring it if the meds mask the discomfort that I am only seeing after she runs.
YOU WILL HAVE TO CONFINE HER AS IF SHE'S HAD THE SURGERY...THIS MEANS CRATING OR CONFINING HER IN A SMALL SPACE, SHORT LEASH ONLY WHEN SHE GOES OUT TO POTTY FOR 6-8 WEEKS. I UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE RUNNING FOR FUN. AS I SAID THEY HAVE NO SENSE AND YOU HAVE TO KEEP THEM VERY QUIET AND CONFINED

I still am "pondering" if I have to keep her on a leash for outside, would I be ahead of the game to have the surgery and she would be healing from surgery instead of adding six months additional leash restriction??????

BOY DO I WISH I'D HAD A CHANCE TO FIND THAT OUT.....AS I SAID IN AN EARLIER POST - CONFINE HER NOW (as if she's had the surgery) OR DO IT AFTER A REPAIR.

Why are there two choices re: surgery???

THRE ARE PROBABLY MORE THAN 2 AT THIS POINT AND WHY I URGE YOU TO JOIN ORTHOVET.COM - IT'S BEEN 6 YRS SINCE MACK'S FIRST SURGERY (5 yrs since his TPLO). THE FOLKS THERE ARE IN "THE KNOW" ABOUT THINGS BEING OFFERED AT THIS TIME - ALSO OLD-TIMERS THAT HAVE BEEN THROUGH THE MILL AND WILL HAVE ADVICE

Thoughts please
KNOWING WHAT I KNOW AFTER OUR EXPERIENCE AND KNOWING SCARLETT IS 7......I WOULD OPT FOR EXTREME CONFINEMENT AT THIS TIME - AS IF SHE'S HAD THE SURGERY (6-8 WEEKS) AND KNOWING SHE WILL NOT BE THE DOG SHE WAS......SHE WILL NEED SUPPLEMENTS, SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN AND PLAY LIKE A WILD 'N' CRAZY GIRL, SHE WILL HAVE ARTHRITIS.

All that being said - my experience is with only one dog - I'm not in the dog world that does agility and working competitions. You can get advice from those owners as well as the "our dogs are here for us to spoil" type people on Orthodogs.
The website is - http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/orthodogs/

I'm sure my experience is 'old' - you will find much more updated info there.

Hugs and feel free to keep in touch - I will share what I know - but I'm only one person with one dog to share experiences.
