I'm not sure what you mean by "modern" netspeak since I've been hearing the term lurk (with same meaning) used since 1997. Anyway, lurking usually means reading posts and hanging around a forum or chatroom, but not saying anything. If you DO decide to say something, you are usually coming out of lurk (or de-lurking, or turning off lurker mode...people say different things) long enough to speak. Some people well then say they are going back to lurking, often ammending "for real" at the end. This implies that they don't intend to speak again.

Lurking = reading, not responding. Fairly simple. Or more specifically, not responding publically. People will often lurk and carry on conversations via PM or email or some other private format. But most people I know generally agree that lurking means to not post.
