It works like this:

* Original site goes up, where the GAFF Team link to and mock some particularly awful badfics. GAFF becomes popular, and has visitors who check back regularly to see if there's been any updates.

* Those visitors start leaving messages in the guestbook, which gradually turn into discussions

* Since guestbooks aren't a great place for discussions, The Team open up a messageboard for people to hang around on and discuss all things GAFF.

* Site and messageboard exist together. The site is for The Team (as in, the official GAFF Team, and not us) to post particular badfics and their commentary on them. The board is for GAFF visitors to post their own badfics, or comment on things they hated about badfics, or... well, all the stuff we do.

* Site goes down due to problems with the host, messageboard carries on.

(I've seen a similar process happen on quite a few sites that had a lot of visitors - guestbook to basic board to InvisionFree-style board.)

Since the site and the board serve different purposes, I don't see any debate about whether one should exist rather than the other. The site is for the official GAFF stuff, the board is for our own discussions.

As for the style of boards, I much prefer something with the InvisionFree format. It allows for a much wider range of discussion, divides that up into subcategories, and it's not so hideously slow to load as Voy. This board can't handle anywhere near the amount of posts the last one could, and it's also far more prone to troll spamming attacks.
