I also agree with Meg- a newsgroup's tiered format can get messy, especially you have folks leaving the entire post in their reply after they type in a short response, and there's too many people living in too many different time zones to enjoy a chatroom as one big party, although it would be cool to have one on the side so folks in the same region could chat if they wanted to. I personally like sequential-format boards- you can lurk or log in, read the posts, spend a few moments adding to the ones you want, and have all the formatting goodies like html and the nifty-kewl tank emoticon.
