I write OCs all the time who are major parts of the story. Have I maybe been writing obnoxious Sues all this time? But then again, I think a lot of people read/write for more versatile fandoms than I do; I write for things like Samurai Jack, which only has three recurring characters (five if you count Jack's parents who usually only appear in flashbacks) and none of them are likely to be around each other. Plus the show is usually about how Jack travels a different place every episode and encounters someone new. I imagine one has less excuse for an OC if writing for something like Harry Potter where there are already a bunch of different characters with different personalities and talents to pick from.
