Just a note about "emoticon" use due to the absence of inflection in written speech.

Common emoticons:

:) is a smile.

;) is a wink.

:P is a tongue stuck out (at someone).

:( is a sad face.

:D is a grin.


Common jargon:

(Capitalization is for emphasis.)

lol/LOL means "laugh out loud."

rofl/ROFL/rotfl/ROTFL means "rolling on the floor laughing."

lmao/LMAO means "laughing my ass off."

IMO means "in my opinion."

IMHO means "in my humble opinion."


You might say to yourself, "Great, now I have to learn a whole new language just to get by on the Internet!" If you do, don't worry: many around the world are saying the same thing to themselves these days, after comparing the Internet now to what it was when it first started. You get used to it after a while.
