Following on from what Dave said in regards going home on leave, arriving in a totally drunken stupour. I remember coming back from N.Ireland to Devizes to go on block leave.
Characters such as Terry Howe, Jeff Bloom and yours truly got the bus into Salisbury. Where we got a carry-out for the journey to Portsmouth by train. Basically we sat on the train getting more and more drunk as the journey progressed. I vaguely remember Southampton through the alcoholic haze. Fratton was the last recollection that I have. The lads were in the same state as me. Everything from then on was a complete blank. The next conscious thing that I remember was waking up at home on the Isle of Wight two days later. Eventually I managed to piece together what had occurred. I apparently had fallen into a drunken stupour just outside Portsmouth on the train and could not be revived by the staff at the station. They checked through my wallet found my I.D card and my travelling documentation and decided to put me on the ferry with strict instructions to get me off the other side. They deposited me on a bench on Ryde pierhead station. They traced my fathers contact number on the Island and requested that he come and collect old sleeping beauty and take me home. A few days after this I traced the people involved that had helped me and decided to show my appreciation by giving them a bottle of scotch a piece for their kindness as they would not except any money for their thoughtful actions. That sort of consideration would not happen nowadays. Sadly most people would not give you the time of day anymore. That kind of respect for a individual is long gone! Mores the pity. Don't you think?
