Jim, just spent the last few hours searching the net for some answers to our dilemma. I found some fascinating facts and figures but, unfortunately, no answer to the question as to WHY the lanyard was withdrawn. As I said earlier, I think it was just part of an out of date uniform (Battle dress) that was discarded but then reintroduced later to smarten up a rather dull uniform.
The lanyard was in use right up until the sixties because when I joined the JLRRA in 1962, my first No2 dress tunic was a BD style, high neck job and I'm certain we wore the lanyard with it. Soon after I left recruits troop and joined Milne troop, the No2 dress, that we all know and love, was introduced and on the one and only photo that I have from that time the lanyard is not in evidence. So, if indeed, it was withdrawn as a form of punishment for some act of disrespect for the colours, then I am at a loss as to the action it may have been attributed to?
There was one other 'legend' that I came across regarding the lanyard. This was in the Royal Canadian Artillery and was attributed to an action during the Boar War that resulted in them having two guns over-run but they where recovered quickly by the Royal Canadian Dragoons, who, allegedly, earned a VC in the action. This resulted in the R.C.A. having the red and blue colours taken out of their lanyard, leaving a plain white and being made to wear it on the right shoulder as a mark of shame for losing the guns. This 'badge of dishonour' was, supposedly, to last for 100 years. I would take this tale also with a pinch of salt, as it is so close to our own 'legend'. As stated above, why would any professional and PROUD Army immortalise an act of shame in ANY of its Regiments. Doesn't make sense! Would make for bloody awful recruiting for one thing.
Time to lay this particular story to rest, I think, unless you get to know any more Jim or anyone else wants to throw his two-penneth in?
