Jim, I think that both of us are labouring under different beliefs here, allow me to try to sort it out? Your original question (that I misunderstood!) was "WHY did the lanyard disappear from the best dress uniform, on the demise of the old BDs?" You then asked when it was reintroduced and I, or rather my benefactor from ARRSE, gave this date as 1973 which agreed with your memory of it being reintroduced when we were in Fallingbostel.

OK, now for the tricky bit. I don't think, personally, that the lanyard was withdrawn for any reason, other than that it was an old fashioned bit of an old fashioned uniform! I have never heard of any story that says it was withdrawn as a mark of shame or punishment for any act of disrespect or cowardice against the colours (guns). That is not to say that there is not such a story, only that I have not heard it. I will do a little research and get back to you............
