Jim, your enterpretation of the laces is very close to the 'official' reason that I was told at a later date i.e. quick to get the boot off in event of an acciden but I like my gurkha version better, more colourful!

With regards to the history of the Bty circa 1939 - 1947, I never had any reason to disbelieve Chris Dunhams version on the 42 site.

Quote:
"In 1939 the Battery served with the BEF in France returning to Dunkirk in 1940.
They then served in Northern ireland as a sub unit of 9 Field Regiment until 1942.
In 1942 they returned to South Africa prior to moving to India in 1943, from then until
1947 the Battery served alternatively in India and Borneo wherin they returned to England."

I personally don't have any contacts who might be able to point you in a direction that would enable you to get a definitive answer. Maybe Chris can tell you where he got his info from and you could possibly dig a bit deeper. Just on a personal note, if I may? I rather like the idea of the Bty being in India around 1945/6. I would love to believe the Bty was the basis for "It 'aint half hot mum!" even though I think that was a bit later, maybe the '50's? Back on a more serious note, I will have a mooch around the net and see if I can come up with anything else, though I have a feeling Chris's info comes from the horses mouth, so to speak!!
