Tony, You asked who run the Battery Club?.....Good question!.....Believe for a time Johnny Gutteridge and Paddy Philips were running stated. No idea who took over afterwards! After closing time we used to go down the slope at the far end of the block and knock on the outter cellar door for admittance. There was always after hours drinking going on.The BONCO's used to turn a blind eye most of the time depending who was on duty. Brandy was also my poison in them days, used to drink the old 'Cockroaches'as we called it!....The best brand was as far as I was concerned was 'Alt Nurenberg'which you could only get hold of from the Sgt's Mess. It was smoother than 'Ashbach'...Towards the end of my time with the Battery most of the guys used to use '7th Field Wksp's Bar especially on lunch-time sessions.'Daddy Mac'and a few other hard -line drinkers including me!...You could always get a drink any time of the day or night, just had to know where to go. Another well-kept drinking haunt used to be in the Transit Camp area.If you got caught, used to say you were looking for the Polish barber for a haircut! Like bloody hell!....We used to drink with the MSO'guys, those displaced persons that used to drive the 'Tank Transporters'....Those bugger's used to drink the old 'Polish Spirits'....Bloody lethal stuff, more like rocket fuel then anything else that I ever tasted before!....It's a bloody wonder how any work was done in them days!.......Crazy but memorable times would'nt you say!......
