Tony, Fallingbostel was part of the Belsen complex. I think the railhead where we loaded the guns was actually the railhead for the camp (Belsen, that is). I remember going for a visit, can't remember who with at the moment, but it weirded me out. The weather was fine, as far as I recall and the birds where singing but the minute we stepped inside the gates, you couldn't hear the birds singing and not once did I see a bird fly over the camp! I used to read stories about how the Germans didn't know what was going on but I find that really hard to believe. The legend has it that the guys who relieved the camp could smell the place from miles away. You're spot on with your title mate. We must NEVER forget!
