Jim, there are those that say "you are not a complete soldier until you've done a stretch in the pokey!" I must admit to doing my bit of porridge in the guardroom at Lippstadt. As you stated, once you got into the routine it was a piece of cake. In fact, I'll go as far as to say it was a bit of a skive. I remember that the worst part of my incarceration was being restricted to two fags a day but, there was always a way round that and we even managed to get a drink now and again.

To save having to lay out your kit every morning, I remember we used to sleep on the floor until someone got wise to the fact and made us get into bed. Even then, most of the kit was permanently rolled and boxed and it was hardly any hardship to lay it out in the morning and put it away again at night. I seem to recall having a harder time on my JNCO Cadre course than I did as a SUS! Then there was always your own Bty being on guard to look forward to.
