Subject: Sharing the past

Ravin listened quietly, happy that Isobel willingly shared her past with him. He was saddened to hear that her mother died when she was born. Thankfully, she was blessed with a loving father to care for her. After learning of the man's good deeds, it was easy to see why Isobel considered him a hero.

He reached over to retrieve his brandy, frowning as he sipped from the mug. It didn't sound right that Isobel's father had been killed for cheating at cards. Those with evil in their hearts were always eager to rid the world of good samaritans. Isobel's father was probably murdered so that he wouldn't get in the way of some power monger who wanted to rule the world. Such lust for power was usually behind the most hideous of crimes.

When Isobel told him about Juan, he squeezed her hand. He knew how it felt to fall deeply in love, only to be left with an empty feeling when that love was ripped away. Did anyone ever truly get over the lost of their first love? It was still too early for Ravin to tell. Although he found himself thinking less and less of Kyri, something always seemed to remind him of her.

"And what of yours?" Isobel asked, kissing his chin softly.

"I don't know my real parents," he began. "My mother wandered into the campgrounds of a Rover tribe and promptly died after giving birth to me. Minnow, the matriarch of the tribe, raised me as her own. Although poor, the Rovers are a very loving, carefree people. Unlike most orphans in Bizmar, who grow up on the streets, I had a wonderful childhood surrounded by people that loved me."

A grin crossed his face when he thought about all the times he hunted and fished with his adopted brothers. "In order to help out my family, I took to stealing when I was about ten summers old. Two years later, I attracted the attention of a master thief named, Enos Zorin. He took me under his wing and taught me the finer points of thieving."

Ravin chuckled softly then moistened his mouth with more brandy. "Enos became like a father to me. Then Tegol Denair arranged for him to be killed in a cart accident because he doesn't like freelance thieves working in Bizmar. Once I learned that the crimelord was behind his death, I began working to disrupt his operations."

He stared off into the distance, the smiling face of his elderly mentor playing in his mind. "Enos was good friends with a man named Josh Belanther. He owned the Medieval Tavern some years back. Enos and I frequented the place a lot, especially after we discovered that an offshoot tunnel from the city sewer system led directly to its cellar. Later, Josh Belanther let us add another entrance to the underground tunnel from a huge tree near the tavern."

A thoughtful look came to Ravin's face as he continued his story, hoping he wasn't boring Isobel with it. "After Enos' death, I became too engrossed in messing up Tegol's business dealings and stopped visiting the tavern. When I finally did return, I learned that Belanther sold the place. Erlic was one of the customers in the place on the day I arrived, and he insisted on knowing how I had simply appeared in the tavern when no one saw me entering through either of the doors. Thus, the tunnel connected to the cellar was revealed to the new owners." Again, Ravin laughed at the memories. "Well, as you know, Erlic and I became good friends after that. Shortly after meeting him, I met Kyri. I had a few flings before her, but she was the one that stole my heart."

The thief smiled wistfully then kissed Isobel's cheek. Why don't we go eat something? Once our stomachs are full, maybe I can convince you to continue our discussion in the privacy of one of those houses." He gave her a wink as he stood up and helped her to her feet. "Lean on me if your leg hurts," he said, before they slowly made their way to the campfire.

Along with the moonsnakes and turtle soup, Benis had warmed up ribs, turkey legs, and boiled potatoes from Kazabet's food pack. Ravin filled two mugs with java. After handing Isobel one they began filling plates with food. Already the thief was looking forward to sharing a private dessert with the dark haired beauty later.
