Subject: Getting to know me
In reply to: Ravin 's message, "Wanting to know more about you" on 12:27:22 03/09/02 Sat

"I want to know everything about you Isobel, if you're willing to share yourself with me that is," Ravin said to her. "Tell me about the things that have hurt you in the past, and how I can go about making you happy."

Isobel smiled, squeezing his hand softly. How sweet of him to wish to make her happy! No one had ever been concerned with her happiness before, except her father of course.

"Well... there is not very much to tell, Seņor Ravin. My mother died when I was born, so my father raised me. He was a very brave and good man, helping those in need who could not help themselves. He would travel to villages ridding them of various monsters or tyrants. He was a hero." Isobel's eyes unfocused slightly as she thought of the past.

"My father taught me how to use a sword and knives. The others in our village thought it was silly and unseemly for a girl to learn such things, but I enjoyed it and it allowed me to be close to my father in a way that I otherwise might not. He did not seem to mind that I was not a frilly girl, though my aunts often made comments about it."

She paused, thinking for a moment about the times she had spent with her father practicing. He had said she was a natural and told her to pay no attention to the ignorant people who said girls could not be swordsmen.

"Unfortunately one day my father met a foe he could not defeat. He was unable to save the village and the people were all killed horribly because they had dared bring him in to help them. When he returned from this he was a broken man. He did not speak much of it except occasionally when he was drunk. Which became more and more frequent." She sighed.

"He began gambling and lost nearly everything we had. I had to work as a cleaning woman to help feed us both." She wrinkled her nose. This was clearly an occupation she had not enjoyed in the least.

"One day I received word that my father had been killed. They said he had been caught cheating at cards and someone had shot him with a crossbow for it. But I know he would never have cheated. They simply wished to eliminate him and that was the story they trumped up." She looked furious and indignant. "I had no proof. There was nothing I could do about it."

"I took work as a bodyguard, caravan guard... wherever they would hire a woman to do the job. My father's sword, which I still carry, was all I had to remember him by."

She turned to look at Ravin, smiling. "As for lovers... I have only had one previous lover. Oh, there was an occasional dalliance but nothing that meant anything. Only Juan. I thought he was a good man, strong and hard working. I thought he loved me... he said so often enough. Swore his undying devotion. Promised to marry me when we had enough money. He gave me a locket that meant a lot to me. It said 'Mi Corazon' on it, which means 'My Heart' in Espaņol. He said it was to make sure I always remembered him when I was away working." She snorted softly.

"One day I returned early from a caravan job. I found him in bed with another woman. The puta laughed at me! Juan did nothing. He did not even say he was sorry. I packed my things and left my village and have not returned since. The locket... I used to wear it. I do not know why I kept it. But..." She paused. "I have thrown it away now. That is over and I have no need of any reminder of it."

She slid her arms around Ravin again, smiling up into his eyes. "And that, Seņor Ravin, is the story of my life."

She kissed his chin softly. "And what of yours?"
