Laurel gave Argus a funny look when he said he’d never seen the elves on his world before. Never? she thought, deciding that was a little too strange to be realistic. He wasn’t lying to her, though, she was pretty sure of that. And, all right, so she knew her people were a proud race, but surely they had to trade and exchange ideas together with the humans and other folk, just as they did on her world. The lowest elven farmer might sneer at the thought of sharing her dinner with a filthy, short-lived human, but even she and her hard working family couldn’t deny the value of the products humans brought to their homes.

Of course, not all elves held their noses when they caught sight of a human, either. Laurel had made many human friends at the academy, and now she traveled almost exclusively with them. Were the elves on Argus world just stupid and highbrowed? Maybe so.

She sighed at his attempt at flattery. Yes, she was beautiful and spellbinding to behold, blah, blah, blah. She’d heard it all before. When he mentioned finding a place to relax and sleep for a few hours, she thought maybe he was going to try his hand at her and get…but no. He looked embarrassed again. Obviously, fancied sharing a bed with her, but couldn’t possibly fathom propositioning her. Well, hell, she wasn’t the one who needed sex to survive. (Did she just curse? No, wait, it didn’t count if it were in her head.) If he wanted it bad enough, he could ask. She might even say yes.

“Yes, all right,” she sighed, almost irritably. She set her plate down and stared down at him. He blinked wonderingly up at her. “Well, come on! Unless you want to sleep on the floor by the fire.”

After gathering their clothes, they settled on one of the spider houses deemed safe and went inside. Laurel pulled her clothes on for Argus’ sake (she really thought constantly trying not to look at something would put a terrible strain on one’s eyes) before lying down on one of the beds. She didn’t even bother pulling the blankets up over her shoulders.

“Good night, Argus,” she said tiredly, smiling slightly. “Or morning, whatever the case may be.” Closing her eyes, she fell into a deep sleep, dreaming of one day living in a civilized manner again, with civilized people, with or without her brother.
