“Darling, I think for the moment I’m safer in a group than I would be on my lonesome in these big, bad ruins, so I’ll stick around for now.”

Most people felt uncomfortable in Erlic’s presence, and that was truly understandable. He was aloof, standoffish, and very cold. But most of all he always gave the guise of mistrust to any newcomer. So it came as a surprise when Jade simply came closer to him, and smiled, reaching out and running a finger along his jaw line. Only two people had ever done that to him, and felt comfortable doing it; Silk, and Onyx, and both of them were assassins.

Surprisingly enough, he rather liked the feeling that Jade wasn’t afraid of him, or intimidated by him, which was extremely rare. Normally he had to get to know a person before even thinking of showing any emotion, but with Jade it seemed a bit different, as if she was expecting that type of reaction. Her eyes seemed to calculate his every move, and he wondered if in fact she might be an assassin, although he didn’t think so.

She continued feeling his whiskers as if she had planned this very movement, before moving her finger down to his chest, letting it linger there a moment before she withdrew it. If nothing else, Jade was quite sure of herself, and her abilities, that much Erlic had ascertained. However difficult it was to resist her subtle charms, he listened to her analogy of the differences of the assassins hunting them as opposed to Tegol’s men.

“The only difference,” Erlic stated while continuing to gaze into her eyes. “Is that the assassins have a plan, and have one, or perhaps two thoughts in mind; capture Alakbar, and kill us. With Tegol, it’s mainly a madman’s thought of send anyone out there that you can, and get them. Don’t plan, don’t think, nothing, just go there and get them. And if they don’t succeed all hell will break loose. Tegol is probably far more dangerous than the Slayers. At least you can somewhat understand the assassins. With Tegol it’s another story all together.”

The woman was quite disturbing to Erlic, no that was a poor choice of words, more intriguing than anything else. She was hiding something just as much as he was, and she probably knew it judging from the look in her eyes, as well as her freedom of being able to do as she pleased, with no hint of fear in her eyes. Those traits were quite rare, especially in a female.

“You look like you have something you want to ask me,” Jade said with amusement.

She was good, quite good, and Erlic had to give her credit. No fear, or apprehension, just the slightest hint of being totally confident in herself, and her abilities, and that, Erlic realized, could make her quite dangerous, but for now he was willing to take that risk. Perhaps she was good, but he also knew of his abilities as well, and that made all the difference in the world.

Erlic stared at the woman’s eyes again, trying to discern any sign of ulterior motives before he spoke. “So why was it that the Sharm felt the need to shackle you to the cell? Didn’t they believe that the bars of the cell were enough? And why the need to remove your clothing?”

Now Erlic had to wonder if Jade would tell him the truth, or simply re-arrange the story to fit her needs. It would prove quite interesting if nothing else. He loved danger…to a degree.
