Laurel beamed up at Erlic when he told her that she wasn’t in any way distasteful, and that he thought she was the one who considered him distasteful! Oh, what a silly man he could be sometimes! When had she ever given him the impression that she didn’t like him?

“How very silly you are,” she said quietly, as if she were telling him a secret. She stroked his hair softly with the fingers of one hand while continuing to smile archly at him. “You have often displeased me, ma’cheri. But I have never found you distasteful.

Spoken like a true lady of the court, she mused absently, her eyes becoming unfocused ever so slightly. It was hard, sometimes, to try and speak like a commoner, probably just as hard as it was for him to not give her those long-winded speeches of his. Well…she supposed that “speaking like a commoner” wasn’t exactly the proper way to put it. Perhaps if she tried to loosen up some, she could learn to talk like Rowan did, and then maybe the others wouldn’t think her so standoffish. She knew they did, too, the way they looked at her, and politely moved away as though afraid to speak to her.

She sighed and sat back somewhat, patting Erlic absently on the arm. It was most wonderful that he had finally consented to kiss her a second time, and this time in public, too. So, at least they were moving along, albeit rather slowly. She wondered what it would take to get him to follow Ravin’s earlier example, though hopefully the results would bring about a different kind of storm than that which they had already experienced.

“I have an idea,” she said suddenly. She was still the very picture of calm propriety and quiet manner, for it was something she had difficulty dropping at all times. “I think, whenever you next get the chance, that you should go and have a little chat with your good friend Ravin. Ask him,” a glint of naughtiness flared briefly to life in her green eyes, but she paused to stifle a giggle, and it was gone just as quickly. “Ask him what it was he was doing with me by the pond’s edge earlier, and then perhaps you can learn from his example.”

Oh, she was bad. But of course she was used to speeding along suitors who tended to drag their feet in the dirt a bit. Naturally, she was just as capable of shooing them politely away, but she had no intention to shoo Erlic away. At least not for now. He was a very intriguing man, and she did have a weakness for humans, though her friends used to laugh at her about it. Especially Rowan, the little brat!

Before she could open her mouth and further explain her little suggestion, though, she was interrupted by a spine-tingling, almost blood-chilling moan.

Mrrrrrr…

Both she and Erlic exchanged a startled glance. Laurel glanced curiously around, but no one else was within several yards of them.

Mrrrrrrooooowww!

Laurel’s jaw fell open somewhat as she finally stared down and saw the pitiful figure of her cat, staring plaintively up at her. Mikoshi was soaking wet from head to tail, her whiskers hanging heavily against the side of her face, and her normally fluffy gray tail dragging like a dirty rag in the sand.

“Sweet Lord and Lady, what have you done to yourself?” she cried, laughing as she held her arms out to the cat. Mikoshi trotted forward and leapt into her lap, soaking her clothes immediately, but of course Laurel didn’t notice. “Oh, you poor dear,” she murmured, stroking the cat’s head. “I’ll bet my family’s entire estate that my vicious little brother is somehow to blame for this.”

After a few more seconds spent murmuring soothingly to the creature, she finally looked up at Erlic. “Oh, be a dear, Erlic, and fetch a dry cloth, would you?”
