Subject: You had to ask
In reply to: Corum & Yorik 's message, "Dude! Like what's wrong?" on 19:41:34 01/23/02 Wed

“Hey, dude!”

Tristan looked up at the figure waving at him to get his attention, and had to blink several times when he realized it was Corum. The voice had taken him by surprise, since he hadn’t thought anyone had seen him, and certainly didn’t think anyone would follow him here. And of all the people who might have done so, Corum was definitely one of the last names on the list.

Tristan scowled and looked away from the other youth’s cheerful face, taking another long drag from his cigarette as he stared off into the lake waters. He’d been thinking about the next conversation he was going to have with Marz, and how exactly they were going to manage to work out this particular little episode. Only problem was, even in Tristan’s head, the discussion quickly turned into another shouting match, and he was still left standing on his own with no foreseeable solutions.

“OK, dude,” Corum persisted, ambling down the slope toward the bank until he was right beside him. “You had another fight with Marz, right?”

Go away, Tristan thought, still refusing to meet his eyes. “Yes,” he said instead, his voice sounding very small and abrupt. It’s none of his business, he kept trying to rationalize, He’s Marz’s best friend. Whose side do you think he’ll take, anyway?

“So, what did you and Marz fight about this time?”

Tristan ignored the second question, smoking steadily on his cigarette and closing his eyes, as if doing so what make his unwanted companion disappear. After awhile, he realized how stupidly immature this was, so he sighed, and, reopening his eyes, shot Corum a contemptuous glance.

“Since when do you care?” he asked, automatically annoyed by how juvenile he was starting to sound. Instead of being offended, Corum only cocked his head and smiled at him, obviously immune to his little verbal barbs by now. Tristan looked away again, still confused by his presence. Corum had never seemed interested in him and Marz before, or rather, what was going on between them. Mostly he just called Tristan names when he was being prudish or laughed with Marz when he did the same thing.

“He’s such a jerk,” he finally muttered, moving to pick at the rocks in the gravelly sand with his free hand while staring at the ground. “Really, all I did was tell him I wouldn’t touch him until he got rid of the damn fleas.” Seemed like a perfectly reasonable thing to say, in his opinion. No reason for anybody to get upset. It wasn’t like being infected with fleas was a deadly disease. It was just downright disgusting.

“So he freaked out and stomped off, saying something about just never touching him again.” He growled slightly and shifted on the ground, feeling extremely uncomfortable about saying stuff like this to Corum. “But that’s no big deal,” he went on anyway, shrugging slightly. “I mean, you know him; he gets pissed off like twenty times a day, so it’s nothing new. Especially with me. I guess because stuff I say hurts his feelings more than he’s used to.”

Oh. He’d never really thought about it that way before.

He cleared his throat, though he didn’t feel so hesitant anymore. “ ‘Cause you know how me and him…and how I…I mean, how we feel about each other and stuff.” He chanced another glance at Corum, who of course didn’t look at all surprised. Naturally, that was because everybody already knew about him and Marz, and Tristan simply persisted in living under the illusion that nobody did or ever would.

He raked his hair irritably out of his face, taking another drag from the cigarette while glaring at the lake waters again. “Anyway, that’s not really the point. Point is, after I left you and Tia, I went to go sit by myself, since I wasn’t about to go talk to him while he was still in asshole mode. But when I noticed that Jeremy was gone, too, I knew something was going on,” he turned and pointed the two fingers holding the cigarette at Corum, narrowing his eyes, “because you know how that little shit has the hots for Marz!”

He could feel himself getting majorly ticked off again, and he picked up one of the rocks he’d been fiddling with and tossed it angrily into the water. “And there they were, in the water, naked together, washing each other’s backs or some sick shit like that. Can you imagine,” he asked, turning his head toward Corum again, “Me, walking in on seeing the love of my life, getting ready to cheat on me with an under-aged jerk off like that ass-kissing little prick, Jeremy!”

Woah. Pull up the carriage and stop the horses. Did he just say that aloud? To Marz’s best friend? The love of my life? he thought, groaning inwardly. For gods’ sakes, it didn’t get any cheesier than that!

He hissed and ran his hands through his hair again, deciding he couldn’t make a bigger fool of himself than he already had. “So that’s the story,” he mumbled to the ground. “Marz is a jerk, but I still love him anyway, and I don’t know what to do about it. He and that stupid kid are probably in the lake getting it on like animals, since that seems to be his way to cope with being mad at me.”

Eventually, he lifted his head and stared at Corum, a slight smile finally coming to his face. “So? Everything all cleared up for you now? You’re probably wishing you’d never asked.” He sighed, almost inaudibly. “If you ever screw yourself over and manage to fall in love with someone, try not to do it with someone like him, okay?” He laughed lightly, but without any humor. “Or, come to think of it, me either!”
