The man lay face down in the sand, unmoving. At first he appeared to be dead, but gradually he found the strength to roll over and look up at all the curious faces that were peering down at him. He reached up a hand and wiped the sand off his face. It had gotten in his beard and itched. He knew they expected him to say something... anything... to tell them what he was doing in the mirror. But he couldn't. He was forbidden to speak of it.

He sat up slowly, his shaggy hair dropping sand onto his shoulders, which were clad in a ragged brown makeshift cassock. He looked up again and caught sight of the skull. No! No, it can't be! Bone demon! Then he remembered that the strange creatures from the mirror land had been chasing him when he had been freed. He looked quickly over at the mirror... good, they hadn't come through with him.

He was frankly amazed that he had been freed at all. How many times had he replayed the same little drama... running from the beasts with their slavering jaws and razor sharp teeth and claws... torn apart at the very mouth of the gateway because no one was there to open it.

Come to think of it... where was he? This wasn't the Temple where he had first entered the gateway to the other world. He noticed that the mirror was half-buried in the sand. How long had he been in the other land? Did time pass differently there than it did here? He didn't know. He'd better be careful what he said to them, just in case.

All this passed through his mind quickly so it was only a few moments before he spoke, his voice coming out in little more than a croaking whisper. "Ay ta, me friends, fe open'n de gateway."

Apparently they didn't understand him, because to a man they just stared at him with a confused look. The skull muttered something at him... a curse of some sort, no doubt. "Another pikin' addle-cove," was what it sounded like.

"Me name is Argus. Ay do not know 'ow long ay wuz in de uvver wirld. De gateway 'as moved from whuz ay entied it," he explained. They continued to stare. Some of them were frowning, too.

He stood up. "Blimp, ay know bullrag is a blind bit shock'n but yew dun 'uv ter stand thuz star'n at me like a sound load o' twits! Anyroad, i'm tiribly spitt'n feathers. Could one o' yew laughin fellows get me some wati perhaps?"
