Marz wasn't surprised to see Jeremy pull of his clothes when he agreed to let him wash his back. The otherworldly youth was gutsy, and Marz certainly admired that. He also liked being the object of the kid's hero worship. People like Jeremy made him feel good about himself; he needed that after years of belittlement from Sistino that left him with extremely low self-esteem.

Together, they made their way to the furthest end of the pond, well away from were the rest of the group milled about. While Jeremy proceeded to scrub his back with the scented soap, Marz thought about Tristan. Why did the dragon have to address him with such contempt so often? Marz knew he was guilty of sarcasm and such at times, but he usually reserved that for others while trying his best to always be pleasant with Tristan.

He shrugged slightly when he remembered the hurtful words he had said to Rowan earlier. If the elf wouldn't have started things by teasing him about reciting love poems, and calling Tristan a pussycat, Marz wouldn't have resorted to sarcasm. Now that he thought about it, he rarely lashed out at anyone unless they gave him a reason to.

If Tristan kept his mouth shut about the fleas, everything would have been fine. But no, he had to make snide remarks! While Marz was trying to deal with the shock of being infested, the love of his life shunned him, rather that offering his support. Marz didn't expect Tristan to throw his arms around him at that moment, but he did expect kinder words. Instead, he was made to feel like he was dirty, untouchable, and unloved……all because of a couple of lousy fleas!

"I'm done with your back," Jeremy said, pulling him from his reverie. "Want me to wash anything else?"

Marz smiled wistfully when he turned to see the expectant look on Jeremy's face. It would be so easy to steal the boy's heart completely by taking him as a lover. A relationship with Jeremy would be so much simpler, because he'd shower Marz with all the praise and attention he craved. No longer would he have to curb his affectionate nature in public, or worry about the possibility of saying something that would tick his lover off. Jeremy would accept him, no matter what he did. The boy would be like a lovable lap dog that never questioned his master's actions, no matter how foolish they might be.

With a tenderness that was usually reserved for Tristan, Marz cupped Jeremy's chin in his hand and gave him a gentle kiss. This was just too damned easy! Having a mindless slave for a lover was certainly tempting, and Marz always did have a hard time resisting temptation! When their lips parted, he stared into the otherworldly youth's eager eyes for a moment then backed away from him. What the hell am I doing? All right, so he had been feeling a little depressed about Tristan treating him like he had the plague, but did he have to turn to Jeremy to repair his injured self-esteem? Well, yeah, why not? He did feel better about himself already, didn't he? But, Jeremy had served his purpose so it was best to get rid of him now, before he conceded to the temptation that gripped him.

Marz swiped the bar of soap from Jeremy's hand. "I want to finish my bath in private so get the rake away from me." Judging by the expression on the youth's face, he was puzzled by Marz's sudden mood swing. When he reached out to touch him, the ex-gang leader shoved his hand away. Why did the redheaded freak always have to be so close by whenever he was feeling vulnerable? "Don't touch me," he hissed, putting more distance between them. "Go away!"

Jeremy blinked, trying to figure out what he did wrong. Everything was absolutely perfect then all of a sudden the bottom dropped out! When Marz told him to get away from him for the third time, he finally complied. Silently, he dried off with a towel from his pack then dressed quickly. While trying to reason out what the hell just happened, he strolled around the pond, coming upon Rowan a few minutes later.

"You have to help me figure something out," he said, plopping down next to the elf. After passing Rowan a candy bar, he lit a cigarette then went into detail about what recently occurred with Marz. "Why did he seem to want me real bad one minute, then push me away the next, Rowan?"

*******

Marz was able to breath a little easy once Jeremy got out of the water. How could he have even thought about getting it on with the scrawny, Cheeto-smelling punk? I must be losing my mind and it's all Tristan's fault! After giving his body and hair a thorough lathering with the nice smelling soap, he rinsed off then existed the pond. He thought he'd have to drip dry until he spotted a towel that Jeremy must have discarded.

Once he was dry, he dressed in an outfit of darkest blue then finger combed his damp hair. He was bending over to tug on his boots when a sharp pain stabbed across his head, bringing him to his knees. His hands flew up to cover his face as he curled into a ball, oblivious to the ground that heaved up several feet away from him, splattering dirt everywhere.

When the pain suddenly stopped, Marz lifted his aching head and felt blood trickling from his nose. He sat back on his heels, pulled out a kerchief and held it to his nose until the bleeding stopped. Vaguely, he remembered something like this happening to him once before yet he couldn't recall any of the details. Surprisingly, he was covered with dirt, and after brushing it off, he finished pulling on his boots.

He swayed a little when he got to his feet, attributing it to the fatigue he felt all of a sudden. It was probably a good idea to get a few hours of rest since he didn't get much sleep last night. Ignoring the headache that now plagued him, he picked up his pack and walked away from the copse of trees.

Upon seeing several of his companions gathered together in the distance, he made his way to the area, sneaking up behind Saras. Grinning, he set his chin down on the genie's right shoulder, and whispered in her ear. "What's going on, beautiful? Who's the new guy?"

*******

Jihar, the mage assassin, rubbed his aching temples. He had tried to draw a little of the dark-haired youth's wild energy to levitate a tiny branch that lay upon the ground. But, the energy had been much to sweet, tempting him to take more than he needed for such as easy spell. Somehow he had lost control, letting the power consume him for a moment. He drew it from the boy then let it fly to the ground before it could burn away his mind. Then, using every ounce of will power he possessed, he managed to break contact with the youth.

When he opened his eyes he found himself visible and quickly recast another invisibility spell. Glancing down, he found the youth gone and the nearby ground disrupted. At least he now knew that it was possible to siphon the energy from the youth and use it to ignite the most powerful of spells, but he would have to use extreme caution next time. The energy that swirled around the youth was immense, foreign, and quite addicting. If he wasn't careful he might draw it all too fast and destroy them both along with everything around them.
