Subject: Can't a guy get any sleep around here?
In reply to: Tristan 's message, "Trying to call him back" on 13:44:23 01/30/02 Wed

Marz was terrified as he stood staring wide eyed up into the face of his stepfather. Sistino had backed him into a corner, horrible rage flashing from his eyes once again because Marz had accidentally spilled some juice on the table. His huge fists came at him then, slamming into his face and chest, sending ripples of intense pain throughout his entire body. He couldn't hold back the tears much longer, yet he couldn't cry in front of his stepfather or he would hold his head under the water in the trough out back until his lungs were about to burst from lack of oxygen. There was no way in hell he wanted to go through that agony again!

When he felt the first tear well up in his eye, he panicked and somehow managed to break away from his stepfather. He ran as fast as his thin legs would carry him, stopping when he saw a tunnel ahead, leading to a white light that promised him comfort and freedom from his pain. But the tunnel frightened him because it was rather narrow. What if its walls closed in on him before he reached the other side? He shivered then took a few steps forward when he heard Sistino's footsteps coming toward him.

"Come to me," the light called, "and you will never have to feel pain ever again." Another step, then two more, before he stopped again. Beads of sweat popped out on his forehead when the walls contracted a little. He spun around, but couldn't go back that way because Sistino and a life of pain awaited him there! The tears flowed freely now and his body shook with confusion.

Marz wiped his eyes in a sleeve then faced the light once again. It would embrace him and give him the warmth and comfort he had always craved. He drew in a shuttered breath then decided he might reach it before the walls closed in completely, if he ran fast enough. Be strong Marz, he told himself. You can do this and then you'll be free forever.

He pulled back his shoulders then bolted forward, stopping abruptly a few feet before the end of the tunnel when he heard someone calling him. The voice was soft and seemed to be pleading with him not to go into the light. "But Sistino's waiting for me at the other end," he muttered.

"Please, Marz, if you can hear me, come back…come back, please, come back. Because I love you, Marz. I love you too much…..too much to lose you……."

"You love me?" he asked, tuning around and trying to find the source of the voice. "But, nobody is supposed to be able to love me." Frowning, he gingerly began walking back the way he came. "Do you really, really love me?"

"I love you," the voice said again. "Don’t leave me. I love you, don’t leave me…."

A smile lit up Marz's face as he ran toward the sound of the voice. He opened his eyes and found Tristan sobbing against his chest. Over and over again the dragon kept professing his love while Tia looked on with tears rolling down her cheeks. "I love you too," Marz managed to whispered as he lightly squeezed the dragon's hand.

When Tristan backed away as if startled by his words, Marz gave him a confused look. 'I had a terrible nightmare and my head still hurts, Tris. I’m awfully tired and just want to sleep now so we'll talk more later, okay?" He closed his eyes and immediately fell into a deep healing sleep, his grip on Tristan's hand loosening.

"Sweet goddess of mercy," Tia cried, brushing away her tears. "You did it, Tristan! You brought him out of the coma! He's going to be all right!" She gave the dragon a hug then backed away and blew her nose in a kerchief. "I know you probably don't want to move from his side just yet so do you want me to bring you anything? How about some java or a plate of the fish that Erlic cooked up?" The petite thief couldn't keep the smile off her face as she waited for the dragon's reply.
