Subject: What the hell happened to YOU?
In reply to: Marz and Ravin 's message, "On the road again" on 10:28:42 01/03/02 Thu

Tristan mumbled something incoherently before opening his eyes and staring at the sky above him. Briefly, he wondered why his head pounded, and why he was lying down in the first place, but as the answers to these questions weren't immediately forthcoming, he put them out of his mind. He sat up slowly, groaning slightly, and looked around, feeling somewhat dizzy but again having no idea why.

Absently, he picked a dried leaf out of his hair and rubbed at the back of his head. “What’s going on?” he asked aloud, to no one in particular. He squeezed his eyes shut, and tried to orient himself. “And who hit me on the head?”

Erlic and Marz were nearby, and the healer, too. They gave him questioning looks, as if to say they had no idea what had happened to him either. Tristan bit his lip, not liking that at all. He’d been standing right in front of Marz a few seconds ago—at least it felt like a few seconds ago—and then that damned skull had dumped those roaches all over…

He shuddered. Best not to think of it. He couldn’t really help it, though, because for some reason, that was the last thing he could remember. Marz, then Barry, then the roaches, and…and….

Oh no! He didn’t! He did, didn’t he? Passed out cold like the big fat pansy he was. How humiliating! How utterly, tragically, indescribably, reputation shatteringly, awf…. Well, no, wait a minute. He narrowed his eyes at some of the others. They claimed not to know what happened, right? He was used to not being noticed, so it was no surprise that no one had seen him crumble like a legless ninny.

He relaxed somewhat, focusing his gaze on Marz now. Fortunately, all traces of…those things…were gone, but two ugly bruises which hadn’t been there a moment ago now covered the sides of his handsome face. Of course, he was used to Marz getting himself into trouble and having to deal with the aftereffects, but Tristan wasn’t too pleased with the bruises on his face, mostly because they looked as if they’d been put there by a man’s fist and not a mant’s claw.

“Who did this?” he asked, reaching over and touching him on the cheek. His eyes narrowed dangerously and he thought of Dalo, but of course that was impossible. Marz shook his head and frowned at him, saying that he wanted to know what was wrong with Tristan first. Tristan didn’t think that was fair and wanted to accuse Marz of babying him, but realized this was only because he didn’t want to tell him the devastating truth.

“I…um….” He hesitated, then gestured for Marz come closer with one hand. His eyes darted nervously about before he quickly brought his mouth close to his lover’s ear and whispered. “I…think I fainted.”

He sat back quickly, trying to gauge Marz’s expression. Any second now, he knew he was just going to burst out laughing and call him names like the kids at home or something. In a hasty attempt to bring the focus of the conversation back to Marz, he touched his cheek once again, a little too hard, perhaps, since Marz actually winced.

“Now are you going to tell me what happened to you,” he asked sternly, “Or am I going to have to get it out of you some other way?”
