Subject: Barry, and far away sounds
In reply to: Isobel 's message, "I am perfectly capable of walking!" on 20:20:40 01/05/02 Sat

Corum listened to what Barry had to say, and in a way felt sorry for the skeleton head. “I wouldn’t worry too much about Marz if I were you,” the youth stated. “When Marz and I first met he didn’t like Yorik at the beginning. It took him a while to get used to Yorik before he finally started to get along with him.”

Corum realized that Marz was undergoing some sort of change, and maybe that’s why he was acting kind of weird. The skull staff wielder realized that Barry was just another person helping the rest of the group. However, spitting out a whole bunch of roaches onto someone didn’t quite feel right, at least to him.

“If I were you,” Corum suggested. “I’d like keep a distance from Marz until he gets to know you better, if you know what I mean. There’s not too many people that like Marz, but those that do, and I happen to be one of them, really know the guy pretty good, and he’d do just about anything to help out. It’s the way he is, if you know what I mean. He’s really a pretty good guy.”

It seemed that Marz had managed to calm the rest of himself down. True, Erlic had used the link to help out, but at least his actions justified the cause. Had he not interfered, Justin would have probably died, especially if Marz’s wild anger had taken control. The merc had no idea of what he was dealing with. It was best that Erlic interfere, and simply put a stop to the commotion. That last thing they needed at the moment was inner conflicts; they had enough of outer conflicts to deal with at the moment.

When Marz finally made eye contact with Erlic, the assassin gestured for him to walk with him. Marz followed the man until they were out of hearing distance from the rest of the group. Erlic was at the moment quite glad that everyone was still alive. The worse of their fears was still ahead of them.

“Let me take a look at that wound,” Erlic began, moving the cloth that Marz was holding on his neck. Even now with Marz’s uncanny healing ability, Erlic could see that the cut had already begun to heal, and there would be no more blood loss from the youth. “I don’t think you’ll be needing the rag anymore,” Erlic commented. “The bleeding seems to have stopped.”

They walked a bit further until Erlic stopped. “I want you to listen, and tell me what you hear.”

Marz simply shook his head. “Are you kidding?” the youth exclaimed. “I’m hearing all sorts of rakin things, and it’s driving me nuts.”

Erlic looked down at his student, and simply smiled. “Because you managed to do something with the first chakra,” Erlic began, “you’re hearing has greatly improved. Unfortunately, it has so vastly improved that even the buzzing of a fly will be detectable by you.”

The guild master could only smile at the look of bewilderment on Marz’s face. “Now, simply listen, and follow my instructions.” Erlic faced him in the direction of the tribal village they had come from. “Close your eyes, and listen, and tell me what you hear.”

At first Marz was describing all sorts of things until Erlic linked with him, calming him down, and helped him to project further. “I hear a swishing of sand,” Marz started to say after a brief interlude. Erlic could see a slight look of confusion on the youth’s face, and asked him to explain.

“That swishing sound is coming from different places,” Marz continued onward, “and yet they all seem to be headed in this direction.”

Erlic asked his student to describe the swishing sound, and what it sounded like by helping him concentrate further on it. “It almost sounds like someone walking through the sand, but at different locations, and yet they're all headed this way.”

The guild master furrowed his brow for a moment. Chances were good that what Marz had described were the assassins in search of their missing prisoner. He understood the groups splitting into smaller, and more isolated groups, what he didn’t understand, was how could they possibly know to follow them to their current location. The most logical presumption was that they had used a mage to see where Alakbar was, and therefore knew in which direction to travel. That could only mean the mage was traveling with the group, or someone that had mage-like powers.

However that thought posed another problem as well. From what Erlic knew about mages, they had to know an area, or have traveled there prior, to even have a good idea of where to look. As he gazed around the area that they had stopped at, there were no distinguishing marks that would be able to tell it apart from anything else. Could the fact be that the Nerombian mages were far superior to those from the west? It was an interesting concept, but one that didn’t sit well with him, especially when he had to worry about one temporarily blind adventurer, and one that was fairly injured, even though she insisted she was quite capable of proceeding further.

The thought of waiting about for an hour didn’t bother the guild master at first. Actually he wanted to find out more about the assassins before getting tangled with them. However, after hearing the news from Marz, he was quite certain that waiting around would only put them at greater risk.

He turned to his student. “You’ve been a very great help Marz,” the assassin stated. “Should you hear anything similar to what you just heard, except from a far location let me know. I know that all of us walking in the sand will cause the same sound, but if you do manage to hear it, let me know.”

With that the two headed back to camp where Erlic immediately headed for Ravin, and took him off to the side. “There is something you should know,” the guild master stated as he started to explain. In simple terms, he explained what was happening to Marz, and why the youth was reacting the way he was. For the moment there was nothing that could be done about it but keep one’s own wits about him or her. He then informed Ravin of how he believed the group after them had split up in various smaller parties, and how they were headed directly in their direction. “Think about what I’ve told you regarding the followers,” Erlic stated to Ravin. “Perhaps between the two of us we can formulate some sort of plan.” He let the fellow thief think about the situation as he further informed him that they were leaving within the next ten minutes.

Erlic walked back to the camp, and informed everyone that they would have to get going. Perhaps if the opportunity afforded itself, they would rest later on in the day, but for now they had to go.
