Erlic had gauged the reactions of both Ravin, and Laurel, and was glad that they didn’t actively try to stare at the hiding place of the assassins. They would be attended to soon enough, he was sure of that. He helped Ravin as much as possible before the thief took off to take care of other matters. Now he was seated with Laurel, and no one to interrupt them.

He didn’t know when, and how, but somehow a rift had been created between the two of them. He was quite fond of the woman, but didn’t possess the experience of dealing with other women as friends, let alone anything else. Those he did know were of the same profession as his, and it was usually a mutual agreement between both parties.

Laurel was quite unique considering that her upbringing was highlighted in the light of nobility. He had tried to speak on her level, but it seemed that had been a mistake. Perhaps simply speaking to her, as a normal person would be the better approach, yet he thought it shouldn’t be that way.

He was just about to say something to the druid when Ardesmar, the Sheikh’s lieutenant happened to walk by. He quickly excused himself from Laurel, and approached the man. In brief he explained of the possibilities that members of the Slayers organization were following his group, and that he, and the Sheikh, should be aware. The lieutenant listened carefully, and related to Erlic that there was no reason for alarm, or concern, especially while traveling with the Jann. Erlic asked Ardesmar what time they planned on heading out, and the lieutenant stated they would leave three hours before midnight. Erlic thanked the man as he walked away.

He sat back down, and tried to formulate some words to open the lines of communication between them. “I’m so glad that you’re taking the time to help Ravin,” Erlic began. “Considering how much of a loner he is, and how he really doesn’t like to impose on others, I’m glad that you’re helping him with this sensitive issue, since no one knows of his inability to read.”

Well he hoped that was a good intro. While formulating other things to say, his mind drifted to that of Rowan. Erlic planned on donning his ninja outfit this very evening, sneaking very carefully to the outcrop that hid the one group of assassins, and killing them on the spot. If nothing else it would decrease the odds a bit, and give them a little breathing room.

It was for that reason that Erlic needed to know just how good Rowan actually was. He believed, although he didn’t know for sure, that the term Shado meant something to do with assassinations. Perhaps it was simply best that he handle the matter alone, considering he knew what he had to do, and how to accomplish the task. Perhaps on the next occasion, depending on what Rowan told him, both of them would try to accomplish the task again, and the guild master would see how dependable Rowan actually was.

An assassin was a trained killer specializing in the arts of stealth, secrecy, killing, poisons, and the ability to get in, get the job done, and leave undetected. A ninja was basically the same, except they had the ability to use a special power afforded to them. They could blend in with the nighttime shadows, and actually camouflage themselves against their background. It was potent magic, one that took years of learning, practice, and preparation, and Erlic had learned the trade quite well. He would simply dress in his ninja outfit, which covered his body in total black, leaving only the area around the eyes exposed. He would then sneak out the back of his tent, and make his way to the outskirt of the camp. He would then crawl away, and around the assassins, coming up behind them, and hopefully killing them. At least now he had a time frame in which to work with.

He turned his attention back to Laurel. “You once told me to speak to you when I had something to say,” he stated somewhat uneasily. “I’m not that good with words, and perhaps you can enlighten me as to how, or how not to say the things I normally do in the context of a conversation.”

Realistically he knew this was true. He did well when it came to dealing with others on a professional level as a leader, but didn’t to well when it came to dealing with people on a friendly level. He was usually too concerned with teachings, proverbial sayings, and other axioms that he never had learned how to deal with people on a lower level. Perhaps this was his problem with Laurel, as well as with many others he had encountered.

“So,” he asked. “Will you help one such as myself? I’ll have to warn you up front that I’m not the most casual person you’ve ever encountered.”

He waited for Laurel, realizing that he had nothing better to do at the moment until the assigned time when he would attempt to kill the assassins. He wanted to have a friendly relationship with the druid, and hoped that she would help him over his stumbling blocks. After all, if he could learn how to be a cold-blooded killer, the other part should be easy. And then again, maybe not.
