"Frio, you did not ask me how badly injured I was. You simply grabbed me and took me off the roc. I do not think you would have done that with a man."

Erlic smiled at Isobel’s comment. True, he hadn’t asked her, he was simply trying to be a gentleman, which in this case was not needed, at least not with Isobel. Fair enough, he thought to himself. Regardless of how strong, and powerful Isobel was, she was still a woman. This fact was quite obvious, as was Laurel, Tia, Sarra, Kandarin, and Neramii, and he would have probably done the same to them. If you paid attention to them, women sometimes got the wrong impression, and if you didn’t, then they’d still get the wrong impression. Erlic was learning that it wasn’t as easy to be comfortable around women as he thought it might be, but then again, he really hadn’t tried to comprehend the other gender.

The assassin listened intently on Isobel’s story of the sword, and admired her practicality of keeping the heirloom, especially since it reminded her of a lost loved one. “Perhaps,” Erlic suggested quite mildly. “If the sword is as good as you say it is, why not have it reinforced with some magic? That way, you could still keep your valuable heirloom, and have an even better sword. It is merely a suggestion.”

As they walked back to the campsite, he also remembered her other slight comment about not being thirsty, rather not wanting to drink alcohol in the hot dessert. Erlic knew well enough that alcohol did tend to dehydrate the body, and drank the liquid sparingly during the day. If nothing else, so far Isobel proved she had a good head on her shoulder.

Upon reaching the campsite Erlic wondered why the group’s eyes were on Isobel, until he spotted Justin make a comment at Marz, who merely shook his head. It was obvious that Justin planned on getting what he wanted regardless if that someone of the opposite gender said yes or no. Hopefully it would not lead to any confrontations.

Laurel was busy with Ravin, so the assassin decided to leave them alone. He poured himself a cup of the java, and started to look around, lost in his own thoughts. He realized that although he traveled with a good group of people, he didn’t know them all that well. True, he realized the extent of their abilities, but that was about the size of it. Tia was one of the younger ones who simply enjoyed being with anyone, and up to this point Erlic hadn’t even said any words to her. Laurel seemed to him not interested in a friendship at this time, regardless of her outward appearances. “Perhaps we can continue this conversation when you are ready to actually converse with me.” Those had been her exact words, and the assassin didn’t feel like trying to entertain what the definition of those words truly meant. Perhaps if he had been somewhat different it might be changed, but he was who he was, and he was happy with himself. Isobel was the newest member, and he was still unsure about her.

There were only a few women who had actually conversed with him; Onyx, a fellow assassin, Silk, another fellow assassin, and Azaya, a mage who preferred an exchange of verbal inequities regardless whether she understood his form of logic or not. She usually gave as good as she got. Erlic had to laugh; especially considering the total amount of women he had actually conversed with came up to three. True, he was no Dalo, or Marz, or Arcanum for that matter, but that didn’t bother him at all. He realized he was an oddity in the truest sense of the word, but it was who he had learned to be.

Corum had been watching as everyone got healed, especially Barry. But now the skull was laying close to Tia looking for sympathy. Corum simply shook his head in disbelief. Barry was smoother than he thought, however Barry was pretty good for being just a skull. Well, it was time that he put a stop to this nonsense.

“Yorik,” Corum stated. “That Barry is intruding on our territory, and we can’t have that now can we?”

All of a sudden Urchin was in Corum’s lap. He petted the creature, and realized it was feeding time. He checked on Brat, and Eyes, and quickly gave them something to eat, giving a small portion of the food to Urchin. He, and Marz had trained the animal to do some pretty neat things, like steal keys, rings, and other small items. Urchin had gotten pretty good at this, regardless of what other people said, that is if they even knew that he did such things.

Corum simply rolled his eyes at Justin. Man, did the man smell! Didn’t he realize that the stench was worse than that of the rocs? Obviously not. He couldn’t take it anymore. “Barry’s making the wrong moves on Tia,” Corum stated to Marz. “Time to put my foot down….or anyone’s for that matter.”

The youth got up, and started walking over to Tia. He plopped himself down next to the pretty elf. “Hi gorgeous!” he exclaimed as he gave her a kiss on the cheek. He then took Barry, looked him squarely in the eyes. Actually he was checking on the skull’s eye, but Barry didn’t have to know that. He was almost cured! Why that little weasel!

Corum looked at Tia, then at Barry, shrugged his shoulders, and through the skull high into the air, knowing well that Barry could fly. He then placed his head where Barry’s was. “My head hurts too,” he chided.

Tia simply laughed out loud, and started to rub Corum’s head.
