Chapter 4

Lucky opened the door to his dorm room and slipped inside, his head covered by a towel as he rubbed his hair dry. He walked over to his bed and sat down, then removed the towel and draped it over the back of his desk chair. He sighed and turned to look at his roommate’s side of the room, smiling when he saw Oz sitting on his bed, casually flipping through a notebook.

“Hey man, when did you get back?”

Oz looked up, smirking tiredly. “While you were in the shower.”

“Well, obviously...” he groaned, rolling his eyes. “Rough night?”

He shrugged, glancing down at his notes again. “Probably a lot of pacing and cage rattling, a little howling... same old, same old, but I never remember the next morning, so I can only guess.”

Lucky chuckled, still amused by the idea that his roommate was a werewolf. He was about to get up and change out of his sweatpants into some normal clothes when there was a loud, insistent knocking on their door. He and Oz exchanged a confused glance, then he shrugged and walked over to answer it. He swung it open and smiled when he saw Liz standing there.

“Hey.”

She stepped into the room and looked him over approvingly. “You showered.”

“It’s been known to happen,” Oz quipped stoically. Liz chuckled softly, then turned her attention back to Lucky.

“You look like you’re feeling better. You rested all day yesterday like you were supposed to?” He had been released from the hospital the previous morning, with strict instructions to take it easy for the following 24 hours, so he had promised to stay in his room and relax as much as possible. Liz had checked on him occasionally, but ended up stuck at Alexis’s place for most of the day and evening, working with the rest of the gang to figure out what had gone wrong with their spell on Spike.

“I was a good boy,” he joked, walking over to his closet to pick out his clothes. “Of course, with my mother calling me every fifteen minutes to make sure I was still here, it was pretty hard to leave.”

Liz smiled, too busy admiring his shirtless physique to comment. She tilted her head to the side and sighed. He heard her and turned to see what was wrong, but saw that she was smiling. Frowning, he pulled a t-shirt over his head and sat down at his desk. “You okay?”

“Fine, great,” she said quickly, coming into the room more so she could close the door behind her. “I thought you might want to go down to breakfast with me.”

“Sure, just give me a few minutes to finish getting ready. You’re up pretty early, slow night last night?”

She shrugged and leaned against the door. “Yeah, we were in research mode yesterday. Kind of boring.”

“You must have slept well, then,” he teased, glancing back at Oz. He was engrossed in his notes again, seemingly oblivious to their conversation. Liz smiled and walked past him, then plopped down on Lucky’s bed with a sigh.

“Actually, I had this really wild dream... you were in it.”

He turned around so that he could see her. “I wasn’t a vampire again, was I?” He was still a little confused by her strange behavior in the hospital two days ago, especially her openness about her dream. Since he hadn’t seen much of her since, and so far she was acting like her old self again, he had written it off as stress over his attack.

Liz laughed and shook her head. “No, no vampires this time. Actually, I think I liked that one better, though. You were with Buffy in this one.”

“Buffy?”

“Yeah,” she sighed, frowning. “You kept kissing her, and it was really starting to piss me off. I told her to get her hands off of you, cause you were mine, but...”

“Yours?” he asked, looking over at Oz in surprise to see if he was hearing this. He raised his eyes from his notes for a moment, but otherwise showed no reaction.

“Well, not literally, of course,” she explained quickly, waving her hand in the air. “She was being such a bitch, though, she practically did you right there in front of me. Said something about me taking too long to tell you I loved you, so she got tired of waiting. I staked her.. well, I tried to, but she’s not a vamp, so it didn’t work. I think I threw her in the river or something....” She frowned, thinking about it, then shrugged. “Whatever, it was just a crazy dream.”

Lucky gaped at her in shock as she stood up and sauntered over to the door. She opened it, then turned back to smile at him. “I’ll let you finish getting dressed... although, I liked that outfit better without the shirt... oh well, meet me in the caf.”

“Um, sure,” he mumbled, staring after her as she disappeared into the hallway. He then turned to look at Oz, totally baffled. “Hey man, please tell me you heard that?”

“You mean Liz’s dream? Yeah, the girl sounds a few shy of a dozen.”

“No, it’s more than that,” he sighed, looking at the door again. “She’s been acting like this for days now, something weird is going on.”

“Well, when you live over the Hellmouth, that’s to be expected.”

“Maybe,” he muttered, still frowning. “But it seems like something else. It’s like she’s just saying whatever she thinks, without censoring herself or... I don’t know, it’s almost like she’s drunk, like she doesn’t have any inhibitions anymore, you know what I mean?”

Oz grunted something in response.

“I mean, in the hospital, she told me she dreamt that we were having sex, and then I turned into a vampire and bit her. She said it like you’d tell someone you were going to the grocery store, like it was perfectly normal. If you had just had some steamy dream about Willow, would you just tell her like that?”

He shrugged. “Yeah.”

Lucky rolled his eyes and stood up to pace the small room. “Fine, but you’re already together. Elizabeth and I... it’s complicated, but we’re not really officially anything more than friends. We’ve kind of admitted that we like each other as more, but it hasn’t really gone that far yet. She told me she loved me the other day... twice. And she said it like it was the most obvious thing to say, like she had been saying it for years or something. I’m telling you, man, there’s something wrong.”

Oz sighed and closed his notebook, then sat up. “Look, you like her, right? As more than just a bud?”

He nodded, running a hand through his damp hair. “Yeah.”

“Then go with it. But if you really think there’s something supernatural going on, I’ll ask Will if she’s ever heard of this kind of thing.”

“Thanks.” Lucky sighed and grabbed his jeans off of the bed, then walked over to the closet area so he could change with some privacy. He didn’t want to keep Liz waiting too much longer, who knew what she might say next?

Nikolas opened the door to Kelly's, holding it for Emily to walk through. He frowned instantly as he spotted Luke behind the counter. "Why do we have to eat here? Now that my father really is a vampire Luke will have a right to make fun of me . . ."

"It's where Liz wanted to meet for lunch . . .quit complaining. You're so boring when you complain," Emily said without hesitation as she walked over to the two tables that the group had pulled together. "Hey guys, any luck last night?"

"No," Liz grumbled, resting her face in her hands. "I don't even know Spike and I hate him . . .is that wrong?"

"Considering he's a dangerous vampire, I'd venture to say no, it's not wrong to hate him. This book you can judge by its cover," Xander quipped.

"Where's Angel?" Emily asked with a smile.

The group looked at her, rather dumbfounded. "And here I thought Cordy was the dumb one."

"Hey, watch it," Cordelia warned, hitting Xander in the arm. "Or you won't get any this evening."

"Em, if Angel were here he'd be sitting in this ashtray," Liz informed her friend with a laugh. "Remember? He's a . . ."

Emily's eyes flashed with recognition before she blushed with embarrassment. "Duh, I totally forgot for a second there. I guess I'm too busy thinking about my trust fund. After all, I turn eighteen soon and, well, that is when I get control of my inheritance. Isn't it cool? I'm going to be so loaded!"

"Well, at least one of you isn't focused totally on sex, I suppose that's an improvement . . ." Luke quipped as he walked over to the table, shaking his head lightly. "So, are you kids ready to order yet?"

"Oh gosh, you're our waiter?" Nikolas asked with a groan. "You are going to poison my food, aren't you?"

Luke looked at Nikolas and laughed. "No . . . I know why you'd think that, but why on earth would you say it aloud?"

Scratching his head Nikolas shrugged, "I don't know . . .I don't know."

Luke smiled weakly before turning his attention to the rest of the table, "Would anyone like any food? Our lunch special is . . .well, since I'm working we don't have a special. But we do have, believe it or not, chili. Any takers?"

"I'll have a California burger, onion rings, a cup of chili, a chocolate milk shake and . . .a coke, oh can I get the shake after my burger? And, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, can you make sure that I get real Mayo on it, not Miracle Whip?" Buffy ordered with a smile. She looked up at Liz, who was frowning. "What?"

"Is that a side effect of being a slayer? An overactive appetite?"

"Oh, no, I don't think so . . . I've just got a huge appetite."

Willow looked at her friend in surprise, "I've never seen you eat a lot before, you've always had trouble finishing your meals."

Waving her off Buffy scoffed, "I just pretend I'm not hungry. I don't want you guys to think I'm a pig or anything."

"Anyone else going to order?" Luke asked, tired of trying to decipher this group's conversations. They got weirder and weirder as he listened. He never heard a group of people speak so completely honestly, as if they had absolutely zero regard for what actually came out of their mouths.

Quickly the rest of the group ordered and Luke disappeared into the kitchen. Liz and Buffy got up to play some music in the jukebox.

"Hey Will, I've got to ask you something that's sort of . . .supernatural," Oz said, leaning close to his girlfriend for a bit of privacy.

"Shoot."

"Have you ever heard of something, like a spell, removing someone's inhibitions? Make them act like they are drunk or something?" Oz asked, remembering his earlier conversation with Lucky, and more importantly Lucky's conversation with Liz.

Willow thought for a moment, drawing a blank. "Not that I know of . . . there are some spells that act like a truth serum, that'll make whoever you do it on tell you the truth when they are asked a question. In fact that's what we tried on Spike, but it didn't work. I've never heard of something removing someone's inhibitions though . . .that's just, freaky! I'd hate to be around when that happened."

"Yeah, I'd imagine so," Oz said, the wheels in his head already turning.

"Hey Oz?"

"Yeah Will?"

She leaned closer to him, whispering in his ear, "All this talk of sex lately has made me . . .well, you've been otherwise occupied until tonight, do you think we could . . .tonight? If not, I will seriously jump the next good looking guy who walks through the door, and believe me, there are a lot of good looking men in this town."

"Whatever you want, can you excuse me for a moment," he said, getting out of his chair. Oz walked over to the phone and quickly dialed the number to his room, hoping Lucky was home.

"Yeah?" Lucky answered on the other end.

"Hey Lucky, it's me, your roommate, Oz."

"Hey man, what's going on?"

"Well, I think I may sort of know what's going on with Liz and . . .well, just about everyone else," Oz said cryptically.

"Really? Like what?"

"I can't get into it now, can you meet me at your father's club tonight? I'm going to be out all day, classes and stuff."

"Sure, Elizabeth and I were going anyway, see you then," Lucky said.

"Bye," Oz hung up the phone and returned to the table.

"Who'd you have to call Oz?" Xander asked, munching on the French fries Luke brought out.

"Lucky."

"Oh . . . speaking of, where is that man of yours?" Xander asked, turning to Liz.

Liz smiled, "That man of mine had a class to go to . . .something about not wanting to miss it, whatever. And, technically, the big wuss isn't my man yet. He's still acting all weird. I don't know what I can do short of jumping him." Liz pouted for a moment.

"I wouldn't mind jumping him," Buffy mused, looking off into the distance dreamily. "Sure, he's not as big as Angel is or anything . . ."

"How do you know?" Liz asked angrily.

Buffy looked at Liz oddly before realizing what she meant, "Not THAT kind of big . . .get your mind out of the gutter."

"My mind out of the gutter? You're the one who is fantasizing about MY almost boyfriend!"

Looking around the table, she hoped for support. "Can you blame me? Lucky's hot in that James Dean cool sort of way. He's not a buff model type but sure as hell sexy. Right?"

"She is right Liz. Lucky is hot . . .I mean, he's grown up nicely. I remember when he was just a skinny little kid with bouncy hair," Emily noted with a smile. "But I prefer my men tall and dark," she added, looking at Nikolas suggestively.

Liz slapped her hands on the table in frustration. "I know Lucky is attractive and gorgeous and practically perfect, I'm the one in love with him for Pete's sake! But you aren't supposed to notice."

"I've got eyes don't I?"

"Watch it missy," Liz warned, waggling her finger at Buffy. "I'll find Angel, sleep with him and turn him bad on you. Then we'll see who gets the last laugh."

"Well, considering Angelus will probably hate you as well, I suppose he'll get the last laugh," Buffy noted with a grin, having gotten the last word.

That Night

Buffy casually strolled along the docks, her mission to find Stefan stalling at the monstrosity that he had called a home. She actually found it rather comical that before he ever became a vampire Stefan lived there. From the outside it appeared to be the perfect demon lair.

Sitting on the bench, staring out at Wyndemere, was Jason. He looked so peaceful, or was it vacant, it didn’t matter, and he wasn’t a vampire and therefore wouldn’t try to kill her. That was always a positive when it came to men, Buffy asserted. Not to mention, Jason reminded her of a human Angel . . . though, to be totally honest, she still longed for the real thing.

“Is this all you do? Walk the docks at night?” Jason asked as Buffy walked over to him.

Buffy smirked at him, her body language sending him very flirtatious messages, “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

He watched her slither over to him, his eyes taking in every curve of her body. He had to shake the thought out of his head. The last thing he needed was to become involved with someone like Buffy, someone he barely knew at all.

“Come on Jason, aren’t you the least bit interested? I know I am . . . just one look at that body of yours sans clothing and I’ll be yours forever,” she purred, sitting down next to him, touching his bicep hopefully.

“Excuse me?” Jason coughed, jumping from his seat. “Buffy, I like you a lot. You are a great girl, but . . . I’m uh, kind of . . .in a, well, sort of relationship. That’s confusing enough, to add you to it would be . . .”

Buffy grumbled, folding her arms across her chest, “Give it up Jason. Carly will be history soon enough, and if I have anything to say about it all her little friends will be too.”

“What?” Jason asked in confusion.

“Forget her. The only thing she’ll want you for now will be to make you one of them . . .or to feed. You are too sweet of a guy to be used like that. I’d never bite your neck and leave you for waste, that’s a promise,” Buffy admitted to the completely perplexed Jason.

“That’s good to know,” he noted, jamming his hands in his pockets as he looked out at the island. “Not that you’d know, but you seem to be hanging out with Lucky and Nikolas and those guys lately . . .”

“Get on with it.”

“I saw, earlier before you came by, Carly go out there,” he pointed to Spoon Island. “With some guy, he had blonde, almost white hair . . . what’s going on?”

“Was Stefan with them?” Buffy asked anxiously.

“I don’t think so . . .why?” Jason muttered.

“Oh look, this must be my lucky day,” Angel groaned as he came upon the scene. “What’s going on?”

“I was just talking to Jason . . .you know, live boys are so much fun,” Buffy retorted, a small smile on her face.

“And what am I? Chopped liver?”

Buffy smiled, trailing her fingers across Angel’s chest. “No, but you just become so grumpy when we have . . .fun.”

Jason threw his hands up in defeat, “That’s it, I don’t need to hear this. Not at all. This is just weird, you people are all weird. You lurk at night. And everything you say has some kind of sexual meaning. You are weird,” Jason said, his tone flustered as he backed away from the duo.

“What’s wrong Jason? Is it something I said?”

He looked at her in shock, “Something you said? Try everything you said since you came to Port Charles. And what about him? Why is he ONLY around at night? And why did you, your friends, and that old guy come to Port Charles, together, for the foreseeable future? I don’t want to sound like a jerk or anything, but it is awfully suspicious. And if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you guys are all up to something, something you involved Lucky and Liz and my sister and who knows who else in!” Jason finished his rant, jamming his hands in his pocket.

“Wow, that was the most I heard him say since we met,” Buffy said to Angel before turning back to Jason. “Calm down Jason. Please, if you wig out again I’m going to have to restrain you.”

“Restrain me?”

Angel stepped forward, slapping Jason on the shoulder. “Trust me pal, she can. She’s beaten me up on occasion.” Jason looked at them, the same stunned expression still on his face.

“Me and my friends, we’re the good guys. To tell you the truth,” Buffy began, getting a stifled laugh from Jason. “What?”

“What? You are now telling me the truth? What was all the nonsense you said before, a lie?”

“No, not a lie . . .” Buffy began, thinking for a moment. She could barely remember what she said before, let alone if it was the truth or not. “Listen Jason, I’m the slayer, the slayer’s the good . . .”

Before she could say anymore Angel stepped in between her and Jason, a warning look on his face.

“What? . . .Oh,” she covered her mouth with her hands, cringing. “Oh no, did I just tell my . . .”

“Looks that way. What are we to do?”

“Well, Jason doesn’t look that smart, maybe he’ll forget,” Buffy suggested with a sigh.

Jason stepped closer to them, tapping Buffy on the shoulder. “Um, Buffy, can I ask you something?”

She looked up at his blue eyes, smiling like nothing happened. “Yes Jason?”

“What the hell is a slayer?”

“A slayer . . .well,” she glanced down at her watch, laughing nervously. “Look at that, the time just flies . . .got to run, have to meet some people . . .somewhere.” She turned on her heels and ran down the docks as fast as she could, leaving Jason and Angel alone.

“What’s a slayer?” Jason asked, not about to let go. There was something up, he was going to get to the bottom of it.

Angel placed his hand on Jason’s shoulder and led him to the bench. “I’m not exactly good at telling stories. But I suppose I can explain it to you simply. But if you end up dead because of this, it’s not my fault.”

“Ok,” Jason groaned. “Just tell me, the truth. Don’t lie.”

Alexis walked into Luke’s and looked around for the rest of the group. She finally spotted Giles sitting at a nearby table with Willow, Oz and Xander and walked over. Smiling, she sat down next to him with a heavy sigh.

“You look like you’re in a good mood,” Xander noted, chuckling. “A Watcher that smiles... I didn’t realize it was allowed.”

“It’s allowed, but it’s frowned upon,” Giles deadpanned as he turned to regard Alexis. She did look awfully happy, although he couldn’t imagine why. They had a serious problem on their hands between Spike and Stefan running amok, not to mention a hell of a lot of research left to do about the Gem of Power, it was not something to be smiling about. “Did you learn something in your research today?”

She shook .her head. “No, I just got... detained... by my husband before coming over here,” she alluded, grinning wider.

“You mean you had sex,” Willow deciphered.

“You are a master of the obvious,” Oz chuckled as he draped his arm across her shoulders. “I’m still trying to get used to the idea of a Watcher with a sex life, though.”

“Hey, I have.... um, I mean I’m...” Giles stuttered, but was interrupted by Xander.

“Hey man, stop right there, people are trying to eat,” he said quickly, grimacing as his hand froze in front of him, a french fry dangling from his fingers. “There are some things in life that weren’t meant to be discussed at the dinner table.”

“Sex?” Willow asked with a frown.

“No, Giles having sex,” he clarified with an exaggerated shudder. Giles rolled his eyes and started to defend himself when Liz and Lucky walked over.

“Hey guys, sorry we’re late,” she said before plopping down in the empty seat next to Xander. The seat to his other side, between him and Willow, was empty as well, probably Cordelia’s. Lucky sat next to Liz and smiled slightly at the rest of the group in greeting.

“Late, huh?” Xander asked, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively at her. “So you finally bagged him?”

Liz frowned and shook her head, ignoring the strangled cough the comment garnered from Lucky. “No, I just had to stop for a vamp on the way over.” She sighed and shook her head. “Duty always seems to be calling around here.”

“Well, evil doesn’t exactly take coffee breaks,” Giles sighed before taking a sip of his drink. busily trying to make sense out of everyone’s strange behavior. Xander chuckled at the comment.

“That was funny... hey, Giles actually has a sense of humor! Who knew?”

“Where’s Cordelia?” Liz asked, changing the subject suddenly. He nodded towards the restrooms and rolled his eyes.

“Freshening up, I guess. I don’t know what she does in there for so long, though.”

“She’s probably putting on a fresh layer of makeup,” Willow said, rolling her eyes. “I sometimes wonder if she actually has a face under there.”

“If she does, I’ve never seen it,” he agreed. “She even wakes up with the makeup on.”

“And how would you know that?” Liz teased. He grinned proudly and leaned towards her conspiratorially, but spoke loud enough for the entire table to hear.

“Sometimes she tires me out, so I stay at her place for the night.”

Liz giggled, and Lucky groaned softly and stood up. “I’m going to go find my dad, I’ll, uh, be back.” He shot a quick look at Oz before leaving the table, still curious about his phone call earlier that day. He had sounded like he might have figured out what was going on, but Lucky had yet to speak to him away from the group. As always, though, his roommate’s face was unreadable.

Liz pouted as he walked away, but quickly recovered as the waitress showed up for their orders. Lucky watched her from the bar with a sigh.

“Trouble in paradise, Cowboy?” Luke asked, causing him to jump slightly.

“Don’t sneak up on me like that, Dad! I don’t think I can afford to have a heart attack right now.”

“Sorry son. Why are you standing all the way over here, though? Shouldn’t you be over there with Elizabeth?”

He sighed and sat down on one of the barstools. “I needed to get away for a minute. There’s something weird going on with all of them.”

“You noticed, too? I thought I was just getting prudish in my old age.”

“No, there’s definitely something wrong, I just can’t figure out what.”

“I think I might know,” Oz said from behind him, causing him to flinch again. Luke chuckled and reached across the bar to touch his son’s shoulder.

“Why so jumpy, Cowboy?”

“I got attacked by a vampire a few days ago and nearly died,” he replied sarcastically. “I think I have a right to be a little on-edge.”

“Good point. So, Oz, you say you know what’s going on?”

Oz nodded mutely and slid onto the stool next to Lucky. “I told them I was getting a drink, so pour me a soda while we talk.”

Luke grabbed a glass and filled it with ice. “Why all the subterfuge?”

Oz took the glass from him and shook his head. “No subterfuge, I was just thirsty.” He took a look a long drink, then set it down on the bar. Luke and Lucky watched him silently, waiting for him to reveal his findings. “Okay, Willow said something today about performing some kind of truth spell on Spike recently. She claimed it didn’t work, but I have a feeling it did.”

“So there’s a vampire running around out there that can’t lie, what does that have to do with the rest of them acting like freaks?” Luke asked with a frown.

“You ask me, they’ve always been freaks, but that isn’t what I meant,” he explained dismissively. “I think the spell somehow worked on them too, or instead. Lucky, you said Liz was acting like she was drunk, right?”

“Yeah, like she’s just saying whatever comes to her mind without thinking first.”

“Well, that’s about as honest as someone can get, even if it is sort of to the extreme.”

“Good point. So, what do we do to fix it?” Lucky asked, turning to gaze over at the table. Cordelia had come back from the bathroom finally, and was arguing with Xander over his fries. Willow was talking to Giles, and Liz and Alexis seemed to be deep in conversation as well. From where he stood, it appeared like a normal evening out for the group, but something told him if he were close enough to hear them, their discussions would be anything but normal.

Oz followed his gaze and shrugged. “I haven’t figured that out yet. They apparently don’t realize what’s happened to them, so getting their help probably won’t be a possibility. I’m hoping it’s one of those spells that wears off after a few days.”

“So you’re saying just wait it out?” Luke asked.

“And hope none of them says anything too embarrassing... or worse,” Lucky added. “Sounds like a plan, I guess.” Just then, the doors to the club opened and Buffy rushed in. She took a quick look around before making a beeline for her friends’ table, shouting out at them as she hurried over. It was still early, so the club was quiet enough that her voice carried to the bar.

“Giles! Liz! We’ve got a problem. I just told Jason I was a slayer! And then I left him alone with Angel...”

Liz jumped up and rushed over to her. “What did you do that for?”

“I don’t know, it just came out. We better go back and do some damage control before Angel runs out of excuses.”

As the two women practically ran out of the club, Lucky turned back to Oz and Luke with a sigh. “So much for Plan A. It looks like we need to find a cure for that thing right away, before they tell the whole town who they really are!”

Hannah planted her hands on her hips and looked around the dreary alley with an exaggerated pout. “Where’s Carly? If I have to suffer, she should too.”

“I don’t know, and frankly I don’t care. I can only handle one of you buggers at a time,” Spike grumbled. “I’d much rather be out hunting right now, but I sired you, so it’s my duty to teach you how to survive.”

“I’m a trained FBI agent, I think I can handle myself,” she shot back. He rolled his eyes, tempted to just stake her himself and get it over with.

“All that fancy training of yours isn’t going to do a bit of good here. You have to learn how to use your new powers. As much as I’d like to leave you to fend for yourself, I’m going to need as much help as I can get when it comes time to get the Gem. You won’t be any good to me if you’re a pile of dust, so you have to learn how to avoid the slayers.”

“All right, fine,” she sighed, rolling her eyes sarcastically. “Teach me, oh great one.”

Spike smirked at her. “Great one, I think I like that. William the Bloody always sounded so... obvious.”

“Can we just get on with this?”

“First lesson, no whining,” he said with a frown. “Vampires don’t whine, it makes being scary damn near impossible.”

“Okay, then what’s the second lesson?” she asked, still annoyed. Spike lunged forward, knocking her to the ground before she could react. He brought his fist down on her chest and sighed.

“If that was a stake, you’d be dust now. Lesson two, a slayer’s not going to give you a heads-up. Buffy may get her jollies from beating up vamps, but she’ll take a quick kill if you give her the chance by not paying attention.”

A shot rang out suddenly, whizzing over Spike’s head. He ducked, then groaned when he saw Sonny standing a few feet away. “Great, loverboy’s here. Get rid of him, or else I’m going to bite him.”

Hannah wriggled out from under him with a sigh. How was she going to explain this to Sonny?

“Get away from her!” he shouted, keeping his gun leveled at Spike’s chest. He chuckled under his breath, almost wanting him to shoot. Pain always gave him such a rush.

“Sonny, it’s okay, he wasn’t hurting me,” Hannah insisted, stepping between the two men. “Put down the gun.”

He gaped at her, blinking in confusion. “What do you mean he wasn’t hurting you? I watched him knock you down just now!”

“It’s not what it looked like, we were just kidding around. Spike’s an, um, old friend, he was just trying to surprise me....”

“In a dark alley?” he asked, raising an eyebrow curiously. “And what kind of name is Spike, anyway?”

“What kind of name is Sonny?” he asked under his breath. Hannah turned and shot him a glare, but her hearing was much keener than a human’s, so Sonny didn’t catch the comment. Spike cleared his throat and took a step towards them. “Look mate, like Hannah said, I was just kidding around. Don’t go getting your panties all in a bunch over it. If you don’t mind, we have a lot of catching up to do, so bugger off.”

“Excuse me, but I don’t know you, and I don’t appreciate being spoken to that way. If I leave, Hannah’s coming with me.”

Hannah walked over to Sonny and rested her hand on his shoulder with a soft smile. “It’s okay, Sonny, Spike is right, we have some stuff to talk about. I’ll be okay, really.”

He started to argue, but could see by the look in her eyes that she was determined to stay, so finally he sighed and nodded. He touched her cheek, noticing how cold it was, then turned and walked away. Once he was gone, Hannah felt herself relax. She knew she wouldn’t be able to keep him in the dark forever, but for now, she still felt the need to hold on to that human part of her, the part that loved him and still wanted to be his girl.

“I should have bit him anyway,” Spike grumbled from behind her. “I could really use a snack right now.”

Hannah whirled around angrily. “You won’t lay a fang on him, you hear me? There are plenty of other people in this town you can feed on, Sonny is off-limits.”

Spike stepped closer, his face transformed with rage. “Listen here, little girl. I made you, I can just as easily un-make you. I can show you just how much pain can be inflicted on a vampire, and trust me, you don’t want to learn that first-hand. I learned from one of the meanest vamps out there... granted, he’s a wussy little Nancy boy now, but back then he was baddest of the bad. I can do things to you that you’d never think you could survive, but that you’d wish would kill you.”

“Can I watch?”

He turned suddenly and groaned when he saw Carly grinning at them a few feet away. “Great, it’s my lucky night.”

“Has Jason come through here tonight?” she asked, ignoring his comment. Hannah shook her head, but continued to glare at Spike, doing her best to cover up the fear she was feeling at his threats.

Spike rolled his eyes and walked past her. “You know what, I’m going to go find myself some dinner. Why don’t you two go play somewhere else? Find one of the slayers, see if you can get yourselves dusted. It would make my life a hell of a lot easier.” With that, he stalked out of the alley, his black duster billowing out behind him. Carly watched him go and groaned.

“He’s so moody. I’ll bet he hasn’t gotten any since the 1800s.”

“Well, you can stay here and worry about his love life, I’m going to hunt,” Hannah said before pushing past her towards the docks. Carly paused, then followed her out.

“Where are you going? I could use a bite myself.... hey, I made a pun!”

“Yeah, a bad one,” she groaned.

“Hey, watch it, or I’ll stake you!” Carly shouted.

“I’d like to see you try!”

“Don’t tempt me, Banana.”

“How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that?”

Carly smirked happily. “As much as you want, Hannah Banana, it’s not going to matter.”

Hannah stopped suddenly and Carly tensed, ready to fight her, but she didn’t turn around. Instead, she stared off in the distance and shrunk back into a nearby shadow. Carly followed her gaze and smiled when she saw the young couple a few feet away, blissfully unaware that they were being watched. She licked her lips and let out a low chuckle.

“Well, dinner is served....”

“I saw them first, so I get the guy,” Hannah whispered. Carly opened her mouth to argue, but she was already darting across the docks. Not wanting to lose her meal, Carly ran after her, figuring she could always complain later.
