Subject: Good Sunday Morning Purple Peeps. I have a question for AS & Chani.
But first, I hope you are all doing well. I miss you guys but it is so hard to find time to get on here and just type and read. I try to keep up w/ those of you on fbook that I can cause I can do that in short spurts but so often stuff here is longer and thought provoking. In other words hard to do at work.
My work schedule has me gone from home from *
8:30 am to about 9:30 pm M-Th so I generally come in, shower, maybe eat and fall into bed. Not much time to do anything else.
So, AS & Chani, I am running out of new and interesting shows I want to download and have enjoyed reading your posts about Dr. Who and thought I might give it a try. But where should I start? I need a season beginning that will clue me in enough and help me catch up eventually to where it is now and as far as I can remember some form of Dr. Who has been on TV for like ever, So where should I start?

I didn't get hooked on it till the current one showed up. -- AS, Sunday, May 01, 01:35:07pm (NoHost/66.183.77.136)
The old style Doctors just never appealed and as my post regarding the difference between 10 and 11 would suggest, 10 was a bit of a whiny bitch and I didn't really watch any eps in full till a few had aired from series 5 yet I got into it very fast....so I would suggest starting with Series 5 (the start of the Matt Smith Doctor), which was good enough that we bought Ali the boxed DVD set for Xmas. Don't forget though that a season of the show is shorter than a US tv series, so you may want to limit yourself to one episode a week and thus extend the first series to end about the same time as the current one ends, so you'll have Who to watch for a while!

I would also recommend "A Game of Thrones" that's just started on HBO. -- AS, Sunday, May 01, 02:16:30pm (NoHost/66.183.77.136)
Staying pretty damn close to the book (s) and great casting, though I'd have made Jon Snow taller...
;-)

2 out of 10 for the season. -- AS, Sunday, May 01, 04:13:43pm (NoHost/66.183.77.136)
Having read all the books and bitched about the overly long hiatus since the last book came out, the tv series is hitting pretty much all the right buttons for a screen adaptation of a story where the cast numbers in the hundreds...I highly recommend the first three books in the series, the fourth is a let down but we're hoping for a shit-load of writer redemption in the book coming out in July.

About other recommendations -- Chani, Sunday, May 01, 03:59:48pm (81-65-192-252.rev.numericable.fr/81.65.192.252)
I must say that so far I am not very impressed by Game of the Thrones, even though the second episode was better than the pilot. It isn't bad, it's rather entertaining but I find it underwhelming. The highlight has been Tyrion but the other characters leave me cold and the writing isn't very thought-provoking...
I haven't read the books so I don't have a prior connection to the characters and the story which probably explains why I am not as thrilled as so many fans.
I'm also on the fence about two others new shows, that are also supposed to be quality shows but don't get me excited either: The Borgias and The Killing (although The Killing had a fantastic pilot)
To me the best tv show I'm following these days is Justified. I adore that show!!!!

Justified? -- Kim, Sunday, May 01, 04:10:55pm (pool-71-170-41-37.dllstx.fios.verizon.net/71.170.41.37)
What is that one about?

It has nothing to do with sci-fi or fantasy. It takes place nowadays in Kentucky, mostly among "hillbillies".
It's hard to define it, it's a sort of modern Western. The lead is terrific, the relationships are complex, the writing is very very good and the show has the best dialogues (it's a very quotable show).
The second season has one of the best tv villains ever, a middle aged woman named Mags!

hello Kim.
I think you should start with the Tenth doctor, that is season 2 of the new Doctor Who. I am not a big fan of the previous show runner Davies (too much melodramatic moments, sentimentality and plot holes for my taste) but it would help you understand certain things, since Steven Moffat who runs the show now, was already one of the show writers then (and he wrote the ebst episodes of the Davies era!), and there's some stuff he keeps winking at...
But if you don't want to go back to season 2, you can start with the Eleventh Doctor, that is season 5, but at least watch "Blink" which is a terrific episode from season 3 (Moffat's best so far,a pure masterpiece!)and "Silence in the library"/"Forest of the dead" that are from season 4 because you can't understand certain things about season 5 and the current season 6 if you haven't watched those three episodes!

I got them from a friend but you can try the infamous bay of the pirates...
Or watch them on streaming site? Email me if you need the specifics.

A friend has recommened Project Free Tv. -- AS, Monday, May 02, 09:24:54pm (NoHost/66.183.77.136)
I make no promises about quality but she likes it a lot and they appear to have Who episodes under the Doctor Who 2005 section.
