Subject: 'Allo!

How is everyone? Between work and raising the new kids (Love them dearly but it's been a long time since puppy and kittens were underfoot for us), have been crazy busy. Toss in a couple of daytrips to Victoria to see Andrew and I've rarely had much time in front of the Mac let alone time to talk to family.

Don has been recording "Community" in reruns for us to try and watch. Have to say it does have some REALLY funny moments, most of which have nothing to do with Chevy Chase. LOL.

We're heading into autumn here but aside from the leaves changing, you would hardly know it. Hot days and generally clear skies, outside of the increased fire hazard it's pretty hard to find much to complain about. Took Casey and Masq out for a walk around the neighborhood after supper and most everyone out there had a smile on their face.

Andy is doing well, enjoying his community and working hard. Working full time for the New York startup still and some evening contract work for a local tech firm on a sort of secret project...no complaints about being bored at least but he's developed a real disdain for web designers who have little clue about how programming works. Oh and his new kitten,Desmond,is a real cutie but as we realised a while ago, never really going to 'grow up'. Turns out he's got some form of dwarfism going on and is lucky to be owned by someone who will take good care of him. Apartment life is a good place for someone who will always be somewhat clumsy and height challenged plus Willow would never give him a hard time the way Cole or Kandy might. He's a funny little cat and hopefully will have a good, long life.

Casey (btw) is doing really well. He's best friend is Ali's kitten Indiana and he does his very best to make sure Masq gets treated like his really tall sister from another mother. So happy we got the kitten first since Masq got a lot more tolerant of little animals underfoot before Casey came and started throwing himself at her! He's one of the nicest tempered pups we've ever had, so good with everyone and a good traveller, loves to camp and listens well when we're out at the hatchery for our evening walks.

Not much else to add, other than I hope everyone out there is doing well and I am thinking of you.

My corn should be ready to pick at the end of this week. Soybeans in the riverbottoms are filling out and should be ready to pick in two or three weeks. The bean crop behind the house might not be ready for quite a while unless a frost catches up with it.

The 3 ears of corn on the left are from the river bottoms. The soil wasn't all that more moist. It is actually a sandy point-bar, but the area received a scant half-inch more of rain and perhaps rain exactly at the correct time for pollination. Still it will be somewhat compromised and produce maybe 120 bushels/acre.

The four on the right are from the hill farm where my house is. The worst ones are on sandier soil on the west end and the better on the east end of the farm where the soils become less sandy. The soil is windblow sediment off the glacial valley train that filled the Wabash River Valley during the last glacial. The furthest westward land on my hill farm is actually a sand dune. If we get 30 bu/ac will be lucky, so our insurance will likely kick in.

Plus it has aspergillus mold in that worst horizontal ear, which means the crop could be contaminated with aflatoxin. As moist as it has been here lately that might be a bigger problem than was seen in those ears.

2012 Corn Crop, 2012 Corn Crop

Saw these guys down where my lawn meets the soybean field.

That's a tom in front and two hens in back. Had another tom down there but he was out of the picture to the right.

And I've taken up fly tying.....

[> [> That takes me back a little. -- AS, Tuesday, September 18, 11:33:43pm (d99-199-122-58.bchsia.telus.net/99.199.122.58)

Wild turkeys and fly tying...feels like being back in the Elk Valley again.

The feed corn crop here might be good, there was plenty of rain before the beginning of July and the crops we've seen look vigorous. But in town, most people don't waste water on their lawns and the only green is weeds-I water my raised beds and a few container plants/new shrubs in the front but the perennials are on their own. I am not sure we'll be able to even have a campfire this weekend when we head to Englishman River park, it's that dry.

Hurricane Isaac dropped 6+ inches of rain here over 3 days. It may have saved the soybean crops from going to the insurance adjuster but it didn't help the corn crops at all, they were already gone. And since that rain it has been raining at least every 5th day. That's almost too much for the soybeans; and it is hampering the corn harvest. The corn won't dry out and the aspergillus mold/aflatoxin problem could be worsened.

It's been one helluva crop year....
