My corn should be ready to pick at the end of this week. Soybeans in the riverbottoms are filling out and should be ready to pick in two or three weeks. The bean crop behind the house might not be ready for quite a while unless a frost catches up with it.

The 3 ears of corn on the left are from the river bottoms. The soil wasn't all that more moist. It is actually a sandy point-bar, but the area received a scant half-inch more of rain and perhaps rain exactly at the correct time for pollination. Still it will be somewhat compromised and produce maybe 120 bushels/acre.

The four on the right are from the hill farm where my house is. The worst ones are on sandier soil on the west end and the better on the east end of the farm where the soils become less sandy. The soil is windblow sediment off the glacial valley train that filled the Wabash River Valley during the last glacial. The furthest westward land on my hill farm is actually a sand dune. If we get 30 bu/ac will be lucky, so our insurance will likely kick in.

Plus it has aspergillus mold in that worst horizontal ear, which means the crop could be contaminated with aflatoxin. As moist as it has been here lately that might be a bigger problem than was seen in those ears.

Saw these guys down where my lawn meets the soybean field.

That's a tom in front and two hens in back. Had another tom down there but he was out of the picture to the right.

And I've taken up fly tying.....

Wild turkeys and fly tying...feels like being back in the Elk Valley again.

The feed corn crop here might be good, there was plenty of rain before the beginning of July and the crops we've seen look vigorous. But in town, most people don't waste water on their lawns and the only green is weeds-I water my raised beds and a few container plants/new shrubs in the front but the perennials are on their own. I am not sure we'll be able to even have a campfire this weekend when we head to Englishman River park, it's that dry.

Hurricane Isaac dropped 6+ inches of rain here over 3 days. It may have saved the soybean crops from going to the insurance adjuster but it didn't help the corn crops at all, they were already gone. And since that rain it has been raining at least every 5th day. That's almost too much for the soybeans; and it is hampering the corn harvest. The corn won't dry out and the aspergillus mold/aflatoxin problem could be worsened.

It's been one helluva crop year....
