Nobody at work seems to watch anything of interest, it's all those silly reality shows or American Idol, etc. The concept of watching something like Who or Game of Thrones is simply beyond them. My friends mostly don't have my taste in dramas, so it's hard to exchange ideas on what to watch...lately we've been going for long walks in the evenings with the dogs and settling for watching something we've got waiting for us on the PVR. I know we still have the latest Games episode in there,by the time this season ends I suppose we'll just have to be patient and wait for August. ThoughI intend to rewatch some of the Who eps to get a better idea of what the Moffat was planning when it came to River and Amy...

I was LOLing a fair bit reading about fan dismay over the death in the latest episode and the interviews with the producers being asked if they are looking to cast any big name stars to fill the void next season. As any long-time fan of the books would tell you, never count on any one particular character to survive or remain unscathed.....

Heh-heh!

It was one of the three episodes I really liked so far.

Here's what I posted on LJ:

Every time I'm about to give up on Game of Thrones, they throw in a good episode!

But an episode that mostly revolves around Tyrion has to be good, right?

And yes there were those final minutes and Ned being beheaded, it was shocking in a way, since Sean Bean was supposed, according to advertising, to be the star of the series, and tv networks aren't known for taking risks, besides Cersei obviously didn't want that (and she doesn't even know about Jaimie being in Robb's hands!), and yet it isn't that surprising for Ned have looked doomed and down for a while so I figured that his journey had come to an end (after all he did lose, so he couldn't survive), and above all, because I have never considered Ned Stark to be the hero of the tale, or even the main character.

From day one, it seemed to me that it was Jon Snow who was to be the hero of the tale in the series. The first episode put him in that position, not Ned. Problem is that Jon hasn't been very charismatic until now and had little to do since the first episode (apart from saving the big boss from the Walking Dead...but most of the credit goes to the wolf anyway). But winter is coming, isn't it?

Speaking of the Stark kids, I have to say that Robb is definitely becoming something of an alpha male on the show too! He's getting the right attitude at least. I like how he responded to Jaime! BTW is it me or Theon totally fancies him?

Once again, the Dothraki stuff was the weak link in the episode, although Jorah's fight was okay (he had to be after we learn that the Lord of The Wall was his father!). Couldn't they borrow from Conan more? I mean, the witch, the price to pay to the spirits of the dead or whatever? All that the dying Khal was missing was the tattoes and blonde Valeria fighting the shadows! Where is Tulsa Doom?!

That said, it's interesting to point out that without her Sun-and-Stars of a husband, Daenerys is basically nothing and the power she had managed to get for herself was only through her man.
Jorah must be torn, given that he is obviously in love with her.

Can we get rid of Drogo now?

Of course I loved the Tyrion's scenes, you can count on Peter Dinklage to deliver, and Bronn was fun (loved his reaction when the whore started mounting Tyrion!), and that new concubine sounds interesting. Her name is Shae, isn't it? I don't know who the actress is but she reminded me of Sibel Kelkili from the fabulous Head-On*.

As for the new character whose name eludes me, the old guy with the big family and children piling up around him for he keeps knocking up young brides, it was a neat scene. The actor's face looked familiar.

I have to say that is the first episode in which I haven't disliked Catelyn.

*ETA: I just checked and turned out that it is Sibel Kelkili...although I think she had a nose job since Head-On.

I have been immersed in the world of "GoT" for 15 years and have learned that there really isn't any heroes. Everyone is very human, prone to weakness and even the ones who survive their trials don't tend to emerge unscathed. It's hard to talk about a lot of this because I don't want to spoil anyone but it's fair to say that a lot of what people seemed to have expected of the show in terms of a clear division between good ( ie the Starks) and evil ( the Lannisters) will get a lot more blurred as time goes on.

Catelyn is meant to be a survivor. You could sum her character up in one word, "family" and what she does can be looked on as her attempts to keep her family safe. Eddard and Robb can be summed up with "honour" while Tyrion might be "complicated", LOL. Jon and Arya are a little harder, even after four books. One of my favorite characters doesn't show up till Book 2 and I hope she makes it into the second season since she has some interesting interactions with one of the villains of the series....who may or may not end up staying one of the great villains, we're waiting to see how things go when book 5 comes out this summer.

A lot of hooks have been baited in the episodes that have aired so far, trying to set up events for next season that cannot be fully fleshed as they are in the book. If there seem to be logic gaps or things left dangling, please know that with 807 pages in the first novel, they've done a pretty damn fine job so far.

I swear that either a nursemaid dropped him on his head or sociopaths must run in the Lannister line and skip a generation. Jaime and Cersei certainly brought a wee monster into the world when that little shite was born!

the experience is very different, anyway.

I see flaws that readers don't really notice or don't care about because for them it's all about the "adaptation" of a beloved book while for me this is just a tv show that I "assess" as such (BTW it made me wonder how I would have considered Peter Jackson's trilogy if I haven't read the LotR and hadn't been so happy to see the epic journey I knew and MY characters fleshed out on screen. It was a good adaptation, but were the films that good? Maybe not...).

On the other hands I liked the whores scene with Littlefinger's solliloquy from episode 7 while many readers hated it, arguing that it was useless in terms of plot and gratuituous, forgetting that when you haven't read the books you don't know what's going on in the character's mind, and that a tv show must find its own way to provide certain informations about them.

The scene, not only revealed things about Littlefinger's agenda and character, but also had meta-quality and it was very Richard III-like! The whores could have been less loud but the scene was cool in terms of writing...and I really like the actor (he played the Mayor of Baltimore on The Wire!).

As for the actor playing Frey I must have seen him in something else. He's British, so he must have played in many English films...

Book Tyrion went to battle, tv Tyrion didn't. Book Shae is younger and less mysterious than tv Shae. Oh well.

Petyr needed that speech, just like Varys needed his talks with Eddard. Purists will complain but within the constraints of a tv script , further actions by those characters would end up being bizarre and it would do the purist fans a world of good to relax and enjoy the fact the books havebeen able to reach a new audience, something that may help nudge the author to actually finish the series off!!!
