Subject: Our Jack died on Monday. Today we said goodbye.

The Honorable Leader of the federal Opposition party died of cancer this past Monday. I won't go into a lot of detail about how much it meant to many of us that he'd successfully integrated Quebec members into the New Democrat Party or how he made history this past spring during the federal election by having a record number of NDP candidates elected and thus becoming for the very first time the official Opposition. For those of us who were born and bred supporters of the party that was always the third best, it was just elation, pure and simple.

The fact that it was only a month ago that he announced that he'd been diagnosed for a second time with cancer (had beaten prostate cancer once before) and now he's already gone is still sinking in for a lot of his supporters....but I will say one thing, that while we may mourn his loss, today at his State Funeral in Toronto, we celebrated his life. I've never seen a funeral quite like this one, with a long time friend and openly gay-and-married minister leading the pretty much non-religious service and this was the closing song...

Goodbye, Bon Jack. We'll miss you.I truly hope we get the chance to make Canada an even better place, the kind of place you wanted it to be.

I guess I should be surprised that his funeral took place in a Metropolitan Community Church. He was a great supporter of gay rights. I even remember a picture of him in a gay pride parade riding a bicycle and pulling a gay banner or something like that.

Not sure who can fill his shoes but I am hopeful that the image of him campaigning in the spring, cane in hand (recovering from hip surgery) and that amazing smile can help all of us stay strong and focused on keeping his legacy of fighting for the underdog alive.
