Filipino prisoners honor Jackson with 'Thriller' show

CEBU, Philippines (CNN) -- Amid the tropical heat of a Phillipine prison, convicted murderers, rapists and drug dealers on Saturday paid tribute to Michael Jackson with a reprise of their YouTube dance hit, "Thriller."

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

A rendition of Jackson's 1980s smash hit by prisoners at the Cebu Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the central Philippines garnered more than 24 million views since 2007, when prison supervisor Byron Garcia first uploaded it to the video-sharing Web site.

Inmates at the prison in Cebu perform their tribute to Michael Jackson Saturday.

The prison has since posted other dance videos, including performances to Van Halen's "Jump," Queen's "Radio Ga Ga," and Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder's "Together in Electric Dreams."

Jackson, known as the "King of Pop," died Thursday in Los Angeles, less than two weeks shy of the first in a series of comeback concerts in London, England.

When he heard the news, Garcia, himself a fan of the 50-year-old pop icon, organized a free tribute performance by inmates for local people in the prison courtyard.

Dancing was introduced at the prison in 2007, as a means of rehabilitating prisoners at a facility once notorious for its gang problem.

Every able-bodied prisoner must dance. If they refuse, they lose privileges, mostly conjugal visits. According to Garcia, the dancing occupies up to five hours a day. However he rejected claims he's abusing the prisoners' rights by forcing them to dance so many hours a day.

He said it gives them a renewed sense of worth and confidence, breaking them of their violent ways. He is convinced his prison is a model for prison authorities everywhere, an example of how to crack the plague of violent prison gangs.

"It brought back their self esteem. We have happy inmates now -- we don't want to go back to the old jail where we had mad, sad inmates," he said.

In searing temperatures, 1,400 men in bright orange tracksuits performed the 15-minute "Thriller" routine perfectly. They rehearsed for 10 hours the previous day, finally stopping at 3 a.m. to rest ahead of the show.

The superbly-choreographed moves, energy and obvious enthusiasm of the prisoners had the audience -- swelled by journalists from around the world -- captivated the audience. Several inmates even invited people from the crowd to dance with them.

"I never thought I would ever find myself dancing with a prisoner," one excited local said.

A local journalist even described the performance as Asia's best way of paying tribute to Jackson.

Garcia, who says the prison has witnessed no violence in three years, paid tribute to the performers. "I'm so proud of them," he said. "They got the dance exactly right."

Although it was "probably wishful thinking," he added that he had actually wanted Michael Jackson to come to Cebu to dance and play the role himself. "Now it's not going to happen," he said mournfully.

Convicted robber Mavin Cabido, 23, said: "I feel so sad as we idolize him really. The moonwalk is my favorite -- I like that."

Manila - Tourists flocked to a Philippine jail Saturday to watch about 1,500 inmates perform a special Michael Jackson dance tribute in honour of the dead star, officials said.

The jailbirds spawned a worldwide Internet hit two years ago with their morning exercise routine using synchronised movements based on the groundbreaking 1982 "Thriller" video.

An unusual number of visitors were signing in at the Cebu city provincial jail Saturday to watch the prisoners perform at 3:00 pm (0700 GMT) following the death of Jackson, 50, in Los Angeles on Thursday.

"Visitors have been calling and checking in with us for this afternoon's performance," said a prison official who did not want to be named.

An AFP photographer at the jail said visitors were told to sign in hours ahead of the scheduled performance to guarantee a slot.

The prisoners' dance found its way onto the popular Internet video-sharing site YouTube, where it developed a huge fan base. The four-minute video has so far generated more than 23 million hits.

The inmates in their saffron uniforms have themselves become tourist attractions, with visitors allowed to have their pictures taken with the dancers after each performance.

Choreographer Byron Garcia, a prison consultant and the brains behind the dance exercise, said he was shocked by Jackson's death and that many of his wards were grief-stricken.

"I am shocked, the inmates are still in grief after learning that their idol is already dead," Garcia told AFP.

He said the inmates had performed the routine for visiting tourism officials on Thursday afternoon, just hours before Jackson died.

Neither one of them strangers to the strangest of headlines, Michael Jackson and Britney Spears also shared a stage. The duo performed "The Way You Make Me Feel" together for Jackson's 30th Anniversary Celebration, which aired on CBS in 2001.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"I was so excited to see his show in London," Spears said in a statement today. "We were going to be on tour in Europe at the same time and I was going to fly in to see him. He has been an inspiration throughout my entire life and I'm devastated he's gone!"

Justin Timberlake posted a tribute to Jackson on his website.
"I can't find the words right now to express how deeply saddened I am by Michael's passing," the pop-R&B hitmaker wrote. "We have lost a genius and a true ambassador of not only Pop music but of all music. He has been an inspiration to multiple generations and I will always cherish the moments I shared with him on stage and all of the things I learned about music from him and the time we spent together. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones."

And the proof of Jackson's tremendous influence on the next generation of music makers didn't stop there.
Beyoncé called Jackson's death a "tragic loss" on a "terrible day."
"The incomparable Michael Jackson has made a bigger impact on music than any other artist in the history of music," the 27-year-old singer said. "He was magic. He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop!
"Life is not about how many breaths you take, but about how many moments in life that take your breath away. For anyone who has ever seen, felt, or heard his art, we are all honored to have been alive in this generation to experience the magic of Michael Jackson. I love you Michael."
Usher, who shared a stage with Jackson once, is also "deeply saddened" by the loss.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"May God cover you Michael. We all lift your name up in prayer. I pray for the entire JACKSON family particularly Michael's mother, children and all his fans that loved him so much," Usher wrote in a statement released by his rep.
"I would not be the artist, performer, and philanthropist I am today without the influence of Michael. I have great admiration and respect for Him and I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to meet and perform with such a great entertainer, who in so many ways, transcended the culture. He broke barriers, he changed radio formats! With music, he made it possible for people like Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama to impact the mainstream world. His legacy is unparalleled. Michael Jackson will never be forgotten

Meanwhile, Sheryl Crow actually worked for Jackson, having landed a spot as a backup singer on his Bad tour in the late 1980s.
"His was a rare talent that we witness once in a lifetime," she said. "One who makes such an indelible mark that for generations singers and dancers attribute him as inspiration. I had the great privilege of watching him every night doing what he did best—entertain. I am grateful to have known him for the 2 years I worked for him and will mourn his loss with his many millions of fans across the world."

LOS ANGELES (June 25, 2009)—Pop star Michael Jackson, 50, died Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in West Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The web site TMZ first reported that Jackson was dead.

TMZ said he was dead when paramedics arrived and that the performer’s sister La Toya was sobbing when she ran into the hospital after he was pronounced dead.

KTLA-TV reported that paramedics responded to a 911 call from Jackson’s home at 2:25 p.m. CDT.

The TV station reports that when the paramedics arrived, Jackson was not breathing.

They performed CPR, the station reported.

Jackson was taken to UCLA Medical Center.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times Jackson was taken to UCLA Medical Center and was not breathing.

L. Londell McMillan, a lawyer for Jackson, did not have any information. Messages left for other Jackson associates were not immediately returned.

The emergency entrance at the UCLA Medical Center, which is near Jackson's rented home, was roped off Thursday with police tape.

News trucks were gathered, helicopters flew overhead, and orange cones were laid out to redirect traffic.

Jackson was attempting a comeback and was planning a series of shows in London this summer.

Breaking News : Farrah Fawcett Dies of Cancer at 62

Thursday June 25, 2009

Farrah Fawcett, a former pinup girl who skyrocketed to fame as private investigator Jill Munroe on the 1970s television hit Charlie's Angels, has died. She was 62.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1976

The model's now-famous swimsuit poster was released in April and went on to sell a still-unrivaled 12 million copies. She refused to wear a bikini -- opting for a red one-piece -- and instead showed off tousled hair and a bright smile.

The actress passed away Thursday at 9:28 a.m. PST at Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif., after a two-and-a-half year battle with cancer. She was with longtime partner Ryan O'Neal, friend Alana Stewart and her doctor Lawrence Piro.

"After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away," O'Neal said in a statement to Usmagazine.com. "Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world."

A forlorn O'Neal, wearing a Lance Armstrong Live Strong bracelet, was spotted leaving the hospital Thursday, telling photographers, "She's gone."

Fawcett (here, at the Jim Stacy Benefit in Century City, California, on March 24) wed Lee Majors, star of The Six Million Dollar Man, in 1973, and the couple was married for nine years, although they were separated in 1979.

CAREER HIGHS

Born Feb. 2, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas, Fawcett, a former college beauty queen, was discovered by a talent scout shortly after moving to Hollywood in the 1960s. She went on to appear in countless commercials and had guest roles on a variety of television shows.

But her career took off in the 1970s -- shortly after she wed actor Lee Majors (they divorced in 1982) -- when she appeared in now-iconic posters wearing a red one-piece bathing suit.

In 1976, she landed a role as sporty undercover detective Jill Munroe on Charlie's Angels.

She left Angels after only one year and began taking on more serious roles. She received an Emmy nod for her portrayal of a battered wife in the 1984 TV movie The Burning Bed and received two more Emmy nominations for her roles as a predator in the miniseries Small Sacrifices and in 2004's The Guardian.

Throughout her career, the actress -- who caused a stir when she posed for Playboy in 1995 and, again, in 1997 at the age of 50 -- always downplayed her looks.

"God gave women intuition and femininity," Fawcett once said. "Used properly, the combination easily jumbles the brain of any man I've ever met."

A BRAVE BATTLE

In 2006, Fawcett revealed she had anal cancer. Although she appeared to be cancer-free a year later, the disease returned, spreading to her liver, despite seeking alternative medical treatments in Germany.

"Cancer is a disease that is mysterious, headstrong and makes its own rules. And mine, to this date, is incurable," Fawcett said on the NBC documentary Farrah's Story that aired this past spring.

"I know that everyone will die eventually, but I do not want to die of this disease. I want to stay alive," she went on. "So I say to God, because it is, after all, in his hands. It is seriously time for a miracle."

LOVE STORY

Fawcett and O'Neal began dating in 1980 and have lived together for years. They have a son, Redmond, 24, who is currently serving a prison term in California after repeated drug offenses.

Despite proposing to her countless times, she always told him no.

But earlier this week, O'Neal told Barbara Walters: "I've asked her to marry me, again, and she's agreed.

He said they "will" wed "as soon as she can, say yes."

In May, O'Neal told NBC News that he has fallen more in love with Fawcett as he watched her bravely battle cancer.

"I know this, that in the last two years I loved her more than I've ever loved her - ever," he told Meredith Vieira. "She's so much more of a woman ... powerful, courageous, fearless and all those adjectives. And I look at her with awe."

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations to support cancer research be made to:

The Farrah Fawcett Foundation
