Notes on the prelims

Like most of you, I watched the Miss Universe 2009 Presentation Show (prelims) online last night. Despite a couple of minor connection glitches, I managed to watch the entire show in the comfort of my home office. The show lasted about two hours. With a pencil and notepad, I scribbled down the scores for each contestant in both categories - swimsuit and evening gown. Some of my early favorites turned out to be big disappointments, like Misses Netherlands, Russia, and Honduras, and I am now loving Misses Bahamas, Nicaragua, Cayman Islands, and Kosovo - to whom I had paid little attention.
From a scale of 1- 10, I gave the highest score of 9.5 in the swimsuit competition to Misses Czech Republic and Nicaragua (this girl was smoking hot!). I gave a 9.0 to Misses Australia, Colombia, Dominican Republic, France, Paraguay (yes, another surprise!) and Puerto Rico. In the evening gown competition, I gave the highest score of 9.5 to Misses France, Kosovo and Bahamas (the hometown girl is junkanooing her way to the top!) Miss Kosovo looked as if she had jumped out of a Vogue editorial. Perfection. Then I gave a 9.0 to Albania, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, and Japan.
Other disappointments: Miss Russia, who looked like a sex goddess in pictorials, appeared like a demure little school girl on stage, with her stiff slow walk and calculated smile. Misses Mexico and Puerto Rico - both in lackluster gowns and horrible hairdo (Miss Turks and Caicos Islands had better stage projection compared to these two Latinas). Misses Colombia and Venezuela had strong stage presence, but their gown selection proved to be fatal. Of all the Latinas, the strongest contender for me right now is Miss Dominican Republic who has remained the most consistent. The strongest European is Miss France. The strongest African is Miss South Africa. And the strongest Asian is Miss Philippines, who surprised me with her superb catwalk skills and bubbly stage projection.
The finals is just six days away. Based on what you have seen from the prelims, who do you think will be crowned the new Miss Universe? Your guess is just as good as mine!
