Subject: Okay, it's official, I'm crazy.

So, I've been busting ass on Old Dogs and reading it for the millionth-and-a-halfth time and I can't take it any more. New eyes need to be on it or I need to back away for awhile. So, while I was stuck at work until 7 pm today, I watched Born Of Hope, a totally fan-made movie inspired by Tolkein's books at Peter Jackson's LotR movies. (If you have a bit over an hour to spare, give it a viewing, it's really quite good.) But anyway, as I was riding home in the car alone, little bits of ideas began to consolidate in my brain for Rayne's story. Okay, I know this one will probably never be finished, let alone be in decent enough shape to be submitted for consideration, but damn! I can't ignore the inspiration!

So, should I try to go back to Rayne and expand on her tale? I'm serious when I say this behemoth is not complete, or even close and it's over 153,000 words now, and that's not counting Windhorses, the story that takes place when she's about 12. Unless I suddenly become independantly wealthy and can afford to quit work and write full time (which is never going to happen, no lotto tickets, no rich relatives and no supplementary income), Rayne's story will not get done.

On the other hand, there is a better chance of getting Old Dogs whipped into decent enough shape to get a query out on it (if I can ever get all the way through with a beta). My chances of getting it published (I think) would be better.

So what the hell do I do?! AaAARRRGGGHHHHH......

I suggest you go to the file you keep on Rayne's story and jot down the idea you have, whatever dialogue is percolating around, the thoughts you have, etc. That way you don't lose it.

Then go back and finish up Old Dogs. That's the practical thing to do...

But remember, writing should be fun. If Rayne is calling again- go visit, stay as long as you want. Maybe you need a break from Old Dogs. Maybe you'll get turbo-charged reinspired after that break. The Muses are not predictable and that's what makes them so fun. As for being crazy, remember what Alice's dad said-"the best people always are."

I didn't really have any cohesive ideas, but I'll try to get them down. And hope they make some sense the next time I look at them... that's the problem.

Very true...
The issue I'm having with OD is that I've had the first few chapters read, commented on, critiqued, and revised. As for the rest of it, less than half has been read by anyone besides me. Well, I take that back. Someone has read the whole thing and complimented me, but that was the extent of it. So I can't tell anymore if it flows, if things I've rearranged make sense, if my continuity is there after the rearragnements, I just don't know. So I'll keep working on it, giving myself a break when I need it. With any luck I'll be able to start classes in a few weeks and maybe that will give me a kick start. Or I won't have the time to worry about it.

Ugh.

But I would love you to give me your impressions. It just needs to make sense. And no, It's been out to people for months, I'm in no rush.

Thank you!
