In the article “B.C. grizzly bear relocation proposal criticized” John Craig discusses the views of the people and county commissioners in Okanogan county, Ferry county, and Chelan county. Craig say’s the Canadian plan is to move 25 grizzly bears to the north cascades, near the Washington border. He talks about how county commissioners fear the bears would wander into Washington threatening public safety. Mr. Craig also tells how residents and county commissioners believe that if the bears do get introduced the government will close more roads to protect the bears. The author goes on to tell how county commissioners think the bears would kill livestock, wildlife such as the already dwindling mule deer population, and attack rural residents and outdoor enthusiasts. John Craig describes how in 1995 Senator Bob Morton got the Legislature to pass a ban on importing grizzly bears to Washington. He argues that U.S. environmental groups are encouraging the British Colombia grizzly-relocation plan to circumvent the Washington ban, since grizzlies are known to travel such great distances. Craig concludes that the team responsible for the relocation plan has scaled down their proposal of introducing five bears a year for five years. They now propose to introduce three bears a year for five years.
