I just don't know how to answer it.

I can remember an incident in which my ex was berating my oldest (who was 5 or 6 at the time) over her playing ball in the backyard and squishing the flowers in the flowerbed. He was pissed off and she was just standing there, head down, with tears rolling down her cheeks. I stepped in -- not in the most diplomatic way. Was I wrong? I dunno. Somehow it still seems like I did the right thing.

I guess if you're witnessing the incident, you can either attempt to steer the parent and child into a more neutral situation (as indy described), say something gently or take the other parent aside. I think that in most cases, parents SHOULD represent a united front. But if it's impossible, it's impossible.

Of course, this stuff is in degrees but overall, I think the well-being of a child comes second to a notion of the infallibility of someone's parental authority.
