Maybe it's just something in my own head, but there seems to be a difference between granting someone an education as opposed to granting someone a trip to Maui. The education seems to be more of a service-to-others type endowment while a trip to Maui is a service-to-self endowment. Does that make sense?

It seems that an education has the potential to allow a person to provide for the betterment of society. But a trip seems only to serve the purpose of relaxation. Not that rest & relaxation aren't noble pursuits, but in the scope of this war, a trip to Maui almost seems to border on some sort of insult whereas an education seems to more coincide with this concept of warring nations in that it seems education would lead to pursuit of peace (in my head it does, anyway. ;o) )
