It's been a while since I read the later books in the chronicles,but I believe Danieal and Marty show up at the end of Chapterhouse right (not Heretics)?

Anyway, a lot of people have thought that Daniel and Marty may have represented Frank and his own wife.
Therefore the fact that Duncan could see them would mean that he was somehow breaking the fourth wall between the fiction of Dune and the author who wrote it. I guess you could say that Frank was the "creator" of the Dune Universe and that Duncan seeing him might be akin to someone sort of breaking through the ether of our own existence and seeing God, the creator, watching everything.

In my opinion, any thinking that suggests that Daniel and MArty are ACTUALLY Frank and his wife or that they are some order of higher beings doesn't really gel with the Dune saga and Frank's own ideology that God may be in the Dune Universe, but even characters like Leto Atreides II who can see into the future can't discern if he's really there for certain.

While I believe that Daniel and Marty's characterizations could easily have been derived from Frank and his wife's own personalities, I think they are somewhat more earthly bound than any talk of the contrary would suggest.

Of course my theory about Dune 7 is that there are prescient thinking machines that will come after humanity. the machines probably also have face dancer capabilities.
As for Daniel and MArty, they are either part of the enemy's contingent or they are something else entirely.
Only time will really tell.
There aren't any easy answers yet.
