Subject: 1st read Dune: where were you?

Hey All/Anybody:

I 1st tried to read Dune in highschool but couldn't get past the 1st 50 pages.

I really read it for the 1st time on a 4-day ferry boat trip from Seattle to Alaska in 1985. I remember reading about Moah'dib while sipping a gin and tonic from my lounge chair on the upper deck with Vancouver Island on one side and the snow-capped peaks of the Canadian coastal range on the other side. Pretty awesome literary experience; blame Canada!

I read the next 3 Dune books while on break from slaving 14 hour days in the salmon cannaries of Kenai, Alaska. I had to throw my copy of GEOD away because it smelled like fish guts. It's easy to read all night long when you are in the land of the midnight sun.

Any other great Dune noob stories?

Cheers, AntiPaul
