No, I read it right the first time. He has engaged the engines since the first jump from Chapterhouse....but it's in that first jump that he entered the "new universe". Remember, he can't find his way out and needs the Oracle of Time's Help to finaly get out. It cleary states that in this new universe there are no stars, perhaps because they haven't formed yet. But in CHD, it cleary states that there are visible stars upon exiting foldspace.

And 6 novels is patience enough for anyone. But I still want to see where they're going with this.
