This seems to be something that Brian either came up with on his own, or took from notes. I don't think the reader was ever intended to know that Mohiam was ever a part of the bloodline. It just seems a bit much- far past cooincidence, that in a galaxy of millions of billions ALL the major players in this huge event were close family members.
For that matter, I didn't think much of the disease storyline that Mohiam apparently gav the baron- which makes him fat.
It was a neat irony- to me- that the baron- a loathsome evil man- posessed the genetic make-up to be "almost there" as a perfect man. His inabilities to control his own hungers and needs and impulses are what racked his body. There's a hint that Alia was starting to plump up when the Baron started to dominate her personality "Insatiable fool!"she screamed at him...
I much prefer the Butlerian Jihad series to the prequel "house" books. Even if every character description is correct- according to Frank's notes, I'm sure that building these near-living characters was something Frank did properly- through great story-telling. These prequels seem to have built a different story while Brian gets to use the characters we know and love, twisting them a bit to his vision of them...
Also, the connection with both IX and the Teilaxu to the Atreides is too close. If Paul had such a close associtation with Either house through his beloved father's actions, we would have heard about it in Dune, or possibly Dune Messiah....
What did the other millon families and thousands of "Great Houses" have to do during these thousands of years if the whole epic rolled around three houses? It's almost presented as if the rest of the houses, besides Corrino, Atreides, and Harkonnen, were minor houses...
Finally, the establishment of the melange substitute in the earlier books was VERY unneccessary. I believe that one of Leto 2's major accomplishments with the human race during his reign was to give them anew need for creativity- thus, the melange substitute was created...I would argue that the storyline about that Teilaxu's deal with the Emperor and the IXians was merely a "fill" story, so Brian could both set up the book 7 ending(thus, giving away a great surprise)and more importantly, for brian, to have a use for those favorite "houses" of Dune fans. I feel this made the absolute need and magic of melange a little less significant for the whole "real" dune series...
He should have created a new storyline featuring houses that would eventually fall under the rise of the Harkonnenes and Atreides. Just my opinion.
The Butlerian Jihad series, in my opinion, is superior to the other prequels. The characters are his own, following the loose guidelines of a far-away history created by Frank...These would have been a sufficient place to 'set up' the endgame story for Dune 7.
